Positives from ISU game

Ok, thinking more about the game, here are some positives from the ISU game:

1) Didn't allow ISU to go on a big run. I felt this was what would ultimately cause Iowa to lose, coming into the game. Instead Iowa stopped all the runs quickly with baskets of their own
2) Rebounded extremely well. Out rebounded them 49-35, and had 14 ORB to ISU's 6
3) Didn't let ISU guards kill them on the perimeter. I felt going into the game, that the ISU guards penetration ability would hurt Iowa. Iowa did a great job on Kane, Thomas, Morris, and Long on the perimeter. The only one who did anything at all was Long, and that was from deep (3-5) from 3pt range.
4) Out of bounds plays. How many easy baskets did Iowa get on out of bounds sets? 3, 4, 5 of them?
5) Woodbury coming out party possibly?? I hope so, as it was his best performance to date. 11 reb, and played the best D of anyone on Niang.

All in all, Iowa played pretty well on the road against a very good team in ISU. I'm sure Fran won't let these guys get to down about it. Already saw the quote from Fran about Gesell and Marble, and liked that Fran is picking these guys up already:

Marble had 19 points and six assists for the Hawkeyes. But he and Gesell missed crucial free throws they would typically expect to make.
Iowa was just 50 percent from the line in the second half.
"Those are the guys I would have picked. I know they feel terrible right now. I feel for them," Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. "But if I could have who I want I would pick those two guys."

Iowa rebounded well, Gesell was aggressive, White was fantastic- I don't think Iowa fans are giving him all the credit he deserves. He was insanely efficient, and added 17 rebounds.

I thought Iowa looked by far to be the most athletic team out there. Sick of reading all the "dorky white guys" comments by the racists on this board.

I guess I'm not following??

Woodbury has struggled up to this point. I thought he played tough D last night, and was great on the boards, while giving 25 good min. last night. Hopefully he can continue those things going forward.

Some find it hard to be athletic or considered athletic if you're white. If you're "dorky" looking and white, its even harder for many to accept. Fact is some of Iowa's most fluid, athletic players are white dudes and apparently look a bit like dorks. And you're not a racist if you make fun of white people. Its perfectly acceptable, particularly in the sports world to make fun of white people.

As for positives last night:

Woodbury played great defense on Niang. I hope he can take some confidence away from this. He doesn't have to be a scorer with this team but Iowa's needs him in the middle of its defense to be a good team this year.

MG played aggressive.

White had a career game.

Iowa survived some great ISU runs.

Geez...did you watch the game? Woody had a great overall performance: Defense, rebounding, passing, general floor game, lack of errors, intensity. I hope he can build on this one. I will bet the coaches will show him tape of himself from this game a lot as an example of what they expect from him.

How can anyone NOT think this was Woody's best game? Fantastic D, or at least far better than any flashes he has shown up until now. Good footwork. Confidence. He did not catch the ball and bring it below his waste before making a move. Excellent passing. His shooting has looked better all year.
Watching Iowa games last year, my wife asked, "Why is that guy even on the court?". Or "This is who you were excited to get?". And my favorite "Are you serious? I can do better than that".
I always defend woody and tell her to mark my words, he will be good and we will be glad to have him on the team.
By the end of last year I wasn't sure if we would see that time come, but if that was a glimpse into Woody's future, I'm still excited.
By his senior year all of you negative Woodbury posters will be having a delicious crow dinner or claiming that you never said "those things" about him.

Woody and gesell are the reasons we played so well. White played great but he does his stuff from assists and rebounds. Gesell is a true floor general that controls games. Woody controlled the paint. And marble on the wing is probably the best passing 2 guard in the country. Marble will have lots of assists because of not being the point as the offense moves better. Gesell might have missed two fts but he was great and with the new rules is actually the better defender between him and clemmons. Anyone who honestly thought olaseni was better than woody should really look at last night and the min and gabe's play. It wasn't bad but he was almost non existent except for running the court for that one dunk.

Agreed its really stupid, maybe people will also stop with comments, like Thug's, Ghetto Boy's, etc. too when talking about African American kids with tattoo's . You hope, but probably not likely..

ISU has had a number of thugs over the last few years. It has nothing to do with race, DeAndre Kane is a thug- not because he is black, but because he spits on opposing fans and tries to gouge eyes out, Royce White is a thug because he hits women.

At this stage in their careers, Woody looks as good offensively as Brad Lohaus, and much better defensively. And Lohaus turned out pretty well.

I think Woodbury simply gets up for the ISU game more so than other games.... He played very well in last years game also. I don't think this was in anyway a coming out party. Just an Iowa kid getting up for a game against Iowa state.
