This to me is huge concern maybe biggest can't believe we are back to no punter no good fg kicker with the kf likes to coach these are important part.

I don't we can accurately say we don't have a good punter yet. Cornbrath was the 3rd or 4th best high school prospect at punter last year. I think we will be fine.

It's kind of silly to say that Mike Meyer isn't a good field goal kicker. He's 28-37 on field goals for his career (76%) and has hit 97% of his extra points, including 100% last year. Last year wasn't amazing, by any means, but 4 of his 6 misses were from outside 40 yards-- he was 5/9 from 40+ in 2011, which is actually pretty good. The kid was a Groza award semifinalist as a true sophomore... Now, he's not great on kickoffs, but here's hoping the new rules neutralize that. I'll take him as our field goal kicker any day.

Yeah, I can see why he singled out punter but all he did was look at 14-20 and say their kicker isn't good.

IIRC Meyer was really good up until the last 3 or 4 games. The Minnesota game specifically I remember a couple misses. He was an above average kicker as a sophomore, hopefully he can make that next step to one of the best in the B1G this year.

I cant believe there are worse special teams than Iowa in this conference.

Are you speaking in general terms, or only about this coming season?

In general terms, Iowa's special teams have been solid, but not spectacular, lately. Even in areas where you think they are bad (and they certainly have been underachieving compared to their standards), they are usually in the middle of the conference.

For example, Iowa has been subpar by their standards on kickoff coverage lately. They were still 5th in the conference (conference games only) in the average starting field position of opponents following kickoffs last year.

They have been really good at net punting over the past 5 years (I am sure top 2 or 3 if I would actually crunch the numbers).

Last year they were near the bottom in FG%, but the year before they were near the top with the same kicker. I think he will revert to freshman form.

They set a pretty high standard on special teams early in the Ferentz era, and they have not met that standard lately. But they are still solid, and hopefully we can see improvement in certain areas. You want to see poor special teams: look at Illinois' statistical rankings in pretty much every category. Yikes.

Meyer is pretty solid, but must make all the under 40 yd attempts....the misses vs Minny and ISU cost us two games. In recent seasons, we have missed some crucial, makeable fgs that have cost us two Big Ten titles(2009, 2005) Think of KF's legacy if Iowa wins titles those two years to go along with 2002.

Punter is a total mystery,so hard to judge at this point.
I will keep a glass half full attitude til proven otherwise.

You realize that this is a pretty impossible standard, right? You show me a kicker who hasn't missed from inside 40, and I'll show you a guy who doesn't attempt very many kicks.

Yeah, and even he missed his share inside the 40:

Nate Kaeding Profile - Iowa Official Athletic Site

Inside the 40, he was 6/12 (!) as a freshman, 8/11 as a sophomore, 13/15 as a junior, and 16/17 as a senior. This is one of the best kickers in the history of the Big Ten if not all of college football. Expecting Meyer to hit every kick inside 40 yards is not a reasonable expectation.

Not to mention the most accurate kicker in NFL history.

Don't forget that we suck at returning punts.

4th in the conference over the past 5 years in return average, tied for 3rd (with 3 other schools) in the conference in return TDs over that same period. Last year we were in the middle of the pack in return average (Wisconsin has been REALLY good at punt returns for the past 5 years).

Hyde look uncomfortable returning last year, but I think it is reasonable to expect improvement from his 1st year returning to his second. We have seen he has open-field skills, he just needs to show improvement with his fielding. I think he was showing progress towards the end of the year, I am hoping we see a big jump in productivity in this facet of the game.

From article:

9. Iowa: The Hawkeyes are still searching for a punter, and former quarterback John Wienke is in the mix. Mike Meyer was just 14-of-20 on field goals last year. Iowa's kickoff coverage a year ago was subpar.

What's the deal w/ Jonny Mullings, he of the 83- and 100-yard punts and the viral interwebz video of his kicking prowess 2-3 years back? Based on the hype, that position should more or less have been settled for four years once he got to Iowa City.
