Poor shooting team so Fran needs to get some shooters

We all know that this has turned into a poor shooting team and boy when we play poor shooting teams that shoot 53% against us we cant win.

jNW is the worst shooting team in the league over 18 games and even when we were on them they were canning them.

And Iowa shoots 32%. I said earlier today I was really hoping they would have a good shooting game but it just aint happening now.

Can dickerson shoot? I hope so, Uhtoff was a pleasant surprise but Gesell had a very uncharacteristic bad shooting game. Mikey G usually cans 4 of those 10 shots.

Is Atwood a good shooter or scorer ( I know he hasnt said yet he is a hawkeye but just wondering).

Can Oglesby get open next year and consistently score?

Maybe if Iowa quit jacking terrible shots, their % would improve. This team takes some of the dumbest shots I have ever seen; my key all along has been shot selection and when Iowa was playing really well, they were shooting a low number of 3's. Hmmm, wonder why they were winning? Couple things, playing better defense and taking better shots.

It is a simple game when you look at it in that perspective, sometimes players make things way too hard and I think this team has some of the lowest IQ players I have ever seen.

^^ yes players taking shots early in shot clock that they do not normally take.

They are pressing and everyone is trying to make big plays.

My point is though we do not have one really good consistent shooter like some teams do.

We need some shooters and scorers who are consistent.

I don't disagree, but even when Oglesby was shooting well, he had patience, that is gone.

If Iowa can't run teams off the floor, they are screwed right now.

I really like Gesell and he is one of my main players, been backing him since early last year.

He has been averaging 12 points a game the last 12 games before tonite on about 40% shooting.

But tonite wasnt his nite. It is sort of like all the hawks, not really great shooters so they have an 0-10 once in awhile.

I agree with some of the shot selection - but there are players on this team that can't even hit a wide open 3 when it comes in the flow of the offense. Uthoff was the only one that seemed able to hit anything tonight.

The biggest problem is still on the defensive end. Iowa doesn't have an upperclassman like a Cole, Gatens or May that is selling out to play with total effort on that side of the floor that the youngsters will look to.

Also, where have some of those strong bench players went? I see they scored points, but it is the other end I am not seeing anything happen.

I never expected to see the hawks play this poor of defense after playing defense pretty well last year.

I agree with you. Most guys on this team can't make open 3's. But in regards to the shot selection, instead of jacking up way too many 3's they can't make anyway they need to drive more or take mid-range jumpers. Get into a groove, then when their confidence is up take some 3's.

If you ask me, this team has basically ZERO post presence. Unless this team is able to get out in transition, basically all of the offense seems to come from more or less what you said.. Shooting threes, or trying to create something off the dribble, taking jump shots, etc. Playground basketball.

The main problem as I see it, as that it seems Iowa almost never has guys post up, and if they do, they don't/can't get the ball to them. Just about everything starts on the perimeter and someone has to create their own shot off the dribble. Mr. Davis's teams were masters at doing that little wrap around bounce pass along the baseline and getting the ball to someone down low on the block.

Or I could be totally off-base, but that's my impression as an arm-chair coach.

I dont think you are off base, you have heard analysts and coaches say "play inside out" where you get the ball inside and try to get the high percentage shot but at the same time this makes the defense turn and look inside so the big guy can pass it back outside for really open jumpers.

1977, I agree most wins early in the season it seemed like Iowa worked a post game with Woody, Basabe, GO0 and White. They got the opposing team into foul trouble. Then teams would get pressure on the iowa bigs with early foul trouble and Iowa countered with shooting outside shots and they don't have the shooters to win that way and they didn't (obviously).

we are not athletic enough and I agree our shooting is poor. We have only 1 player on the entire team who can drive to the basket(marble).
