Pollard, Campbell and Goetz

A lot of season left to play and who knows just how long Kirk wants to keep going. But I tend to think he is nearing the end.

One thing that crossed my mind. Anyone ever hear Pollard talk about his future? He's only 60, but he's the second longest tenured AD in P4. Does he want to be a commissioner? Or take a stab as AD at an elite program? Or possibly even hang it up at a fairly young age and do other things with his remaining years? Wonder what ISU people hear about that.

And I wonder if Campbell would have much interest in sticking around Ames without Pollard? I'm guessing maybe not.

Either way, if I'm Goetz and need a head coach, I'm immediately calling Campbell's agent and seeing what his level of interest might be.

Even with varying levels of Kirk fatigue, most long-time fans know the slip into lower tier Big Ten status is quite possible with the next coach. In my opinion, Campbell would be one of the better picks to assure that doesn't happen. And someone who might (maybe) be interested, particularly with an AD like Goetz calling the shots.

I don't see Campbell being interested in coaching at Iowa. Ever.
How come? Ohio guy. Instead of playing UCF and TCU and Kansas, he'd get a chance to play Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan.

And he's well aware of the resources of the Big Ten and at Iowa specifically. He might look at it as a shot to coach there for 20 years with one AD. And with a fan base with realistic expectations, especially if you understand the state and know how to play the PR game (which he does).

He has those things at Iowa State, too, but I bet his thinking changes if Pollard isn't around. Plus, he's a college football guy from Ohio. Hard to compare the truck stop conference of the new Big 12 with the Big Ten.

Campbell has a better team, more NIL money, stud QBs, CyTown which is unbelievably impressive, 100% job security as long as he lives, and a softer schedule. Their program has BIG donors backing it who want to make ISU the big dog in town and they are spending freight trains of cash to make it happen...it's bigger than Pollard. Like Barta and Goetz, he's just the intermediary between the money people and the programs. You think he drummed up all that money and came up with the idea for CyTown? He's just the press conference face is all when it comes to football.

Why on earth would that dude take the Iowa job where there's less than zero chance he'd ever be able to recruit a Purdy, Becht, Lazard, Hall. You think a few million in extra salary is going to get him to jump ship to the team he hates more than any other? Newsflash, with the amount of money ISU donors are pumping into that program, he's gonna surpass Farence's contract real quick anyway. He's the best coach they've had in any sport by two miles and knows he's gonna have a statue out front at some point. Iowa ain't the more desirable job in any way. Maybe prior to 2019 it was, but not anymore.

Does Iowa State have a bigger donor base than Iowa? I'm uneducated on that.

And regardless if Campbell is interested or not, my point was I'm at least calling him if I'm Goetz.

Money-wise, yes. Even NIL aside, CyTown is a $225M project with no debt. ISU donors are sick of the Hawks and they're doing something about it.

People can't wrap their heads around how ISU can be bigger than big brother, but if you think about it...if you had an extra ten mil burning a hole in your pocket would you give it to the Hawks knowing this is what they'd do with it? We aren't big brother anymore.

Not me.

I'd save myself the embarrassment of Campbell struggling not to laugh while telling his coaches and players he got a call from Iowa's AD asking if he'd dump his prom date for Iowa.

I'll say this about Campbell. I'd have lost a lot of $ if you'd have told me 3-7 yrs ago that he'd have both had this much success at ISU and he'd still be there. I still think he's crazy for having stayed after having just a whiff of success there. I thought the USC job a few yrs ago was on the table for him. I figure the ND job is a goal of his down the road if I had to guess. But I haven't a clue I've been wrong about him every time I've said anything about him. So if I say he'll have less then no interest in the Iowa job whenever it comes open I'll probably be wrong about that too.

Campbell doesn't leave ISU for anything less than a blue blood or teams with money to spend:

Ohio St - not open
Michigan - not open
Penn St - not open
USC - might open, not sure he would take it - no one goes to home games
Oregon - not open
Nebraska - doubt he goes there
Notre Dame - not open
Alabama - might open up soon
Auburn - might open up if losing continues
LSU - not open
Georgia - not open
Oklahoma - depends on this season
Florida - might open up
Texas - not open
Miami - depends on the season
Tennessee - not open
Clemson - not open

Did I forget someone?

He's got it made where he's at and what conference he's in

A lot to reasons stated by others above. Some of my thoughts, he seems to be very happy where he is at and going to his BIG rival doesn't square with who he is. He doesn't seem to be driven by money and going to the highest bidder. As mentioned, he has an easier path to more wins and possibly playoffs than he would have at Iowa.

He might leave someday but I could see him staying there for a long, long time.

On another note, some of the comments above about where he could end up? I would take Alabama off that list. DeBoer has something like a $70 million buyout. Alabama is not that wealthy of a school and they have nowhere near the ability to buy that contract out. Unlike Texas A&M a couple of years ago.

Pollard deserves all the credit in the world for what he's done at ISU.

Barta screwed the pooch and allowed mediocrity to creep in which then became the norm. Fans accepted it, donors accepted it, and now here we are looking up at irreverence. Someone should have punched him in the face on his way out the door.

All in all, Iowa has been passed by "little brother" and there's no way Beth pulls us out of the hole we're in. Almost every single athletic program is terrible and there's no money to pull them out.

Everyone just needs to settle in and get use to this for a while. Maybe head up to Ames and check out their amazing CyTown.

Unless Michigan, OSU, Notre Dame or the Steelers come calling, if I am Matt CampbelI…I am staying put in Ames.

If it looks like we are heading toward 2 super conferences, and ISU not getting an invite …then I could see Campbell entertaining BG’s phone call.
