Please tell me what you think

Hawk Fans,
Do you feel that Kirk Ferentz deserves to be the highest paid coach in the Big Ten with the results that he has produced?

Absolutely, without a doubt... but it appears that distinction is only going to last the next couple of weeks.

Yes based on past success. The hawks took a big dive in Fry's last year as he was ill. Throw out Kirk's first two years as rebuilding. The hawk success in 2001 to 2004 was excellent with three bowl wins and two big 10 championships. 2005 and 2006 were good years and but one could say the start of Iowa losing some games it should win. But almost beating a top 10 Texas team in the Alamo Bowl and actually outplaying Texas was a good coaching effort. 2008 and 2009 and heading into 2010 were very good years which got Kirk his latest raises and extensions which were deserved.

In the last two years the hawks have not had great results and there are patterns where the coaches lose us two games a year. He has earned his salary and longevitiy but I dont think he needs any more salary increases or incentives.

are there really people like you asking questions like this? Can you just wait till the next loss to comment.

Can we please start holding the players a little more accountable for our shortcomings instead of placing the blame on the coaches all the time. I realize that the play calling has been suspect, but we still have to perform between the lines. A coach doesn't always make or break a program. Look at Cheezdik... He tanked at ISU and they thought he was garbage, then went to Auburn and won a NC. I still think he sucks, but he had players that could step up and make plays so in the end he looked like he knew what he was doing. Do I think that any Big Ten coach is worth 3+ mil a year? The answer to that would be a definitive no, but if anyone deserves it, it would be Captain Kirk. He has done more with less heralded recruits than any coach I have ever seen....

I don't see the RoI. No, he isn't "worth" $3.7 million.

I think that Ferentz is in a ****ed if you do and ****ed if you don't situation. You can go out and get the type of players you want and let them spend two years preparing to play. Then you get crap for not landing big name recruits. If you go out and get a lot of talent and tell them they have to sit 2 years, they leave and you have to play guys before they are ready. So you have two years where your program doesn't perform while you are developing players and due to some injuries and decisions in 2010 this current cycle is going to be 3 years of underperforming. I am counting next year but now that I have said this out loud we will have a great season next year and I will have crap all over my face.

To answer your question no. He should get a decent amount but not what he is getting. I don't think that he can coach the type of players that he is expected to get.

Did it deserve it when it was signed. I would say yes, is he deserving right now I would say no. Does he deserve the chance to right the ship I would say yes because he has done it before. KF has his work cut for him changes are needed to right ship.

It pales in comparison to what the football team brings in. You bring in Tim Brewster who takes your team from 7 wins to 2, and pretty soon the stadium is half full. I don't want to go down that road.

Over the course of 13 years... No. I look at it this way, in order to be in the top 10 paid coaches, you have to be in the top ten every year with at least one championship every ten years so at least one for us by now. My logic comes from the other top paid coaches in the nation. 1 thru 5 top paid all have at least one NC title. It is not Ferentz to fault for getting the money though, it would be the AD. If I remember it correctly, Ferentz didnt have a signed contract for the first few years and that is when we were getting on fire. The AD felt that Ferentz was going to leave and he went all out to try and keep him. I blame the AD for his eyes being bigger than his wallet. He should be the one explaining why our results are keeping up with the currently salary that Ferentz is getting paid IMO!

Hawk Fans,
Do you feel that Kirk Ferentz deserves to be the highest paid coach in the Big Ten with the results that he has produced?

Depends on the results you are measuring. For instance if you have a wife of girlfriend ar you with her because of her looks, personality, brains, interest or the whole package. I think we pay KF for the whole package and not just wins and losses.

I would be the highest paid dude on my block if I had ten bucks for every time someone started a thread asking this question. How many times do you need to ask this question?

btw- Iowa is a very "revenue positive" athletic program. KF has a lot to do with that. You have to put that into the mix. The ROI is pretty solid over time.

I want Iowa to win 10 games or more. I'm a season ticket holder and go to a lot of road games. I bleed black and gold. However, this question about his salary is getting old and is rather lame in my opinion.

I'm not defending KF, I'm frustrated like everyone else. At the same time its important to deal in accurate informtion.

You have to consider the incentives of EACH coaches' contracts. And not look at these dumbed down lists on the internet.

KF's base is $1.92. He'll earn $2.2 max for this season due to a bowl appearance, grad rate >70% and assuming he finishes in top 25.

So please someone list the pay of the other coaches - based on the reality of their teams' performance.

............then we can decide.

He is absolutely not worth it. If you are the highest paid coach in the Big Ten, he should have won the conference more. It has been since2004.

Texas was not a top-10 team the year we played them in the Alamo bowl.

For what Kirk gets paid, the results are definitely not there. At least not consistently enough. And a coach that nearly gets paid $4 mil. a year should definitely NOT be losing to Minnesota, and especially not TWICE in a row. And he shouldn't be able to pass it off by just saying, "that's football" because "that's ********".
