Please disect the Dee's 28 point collapse

The hawks scored a TD with about 7 minutes to go in the 3rd qtr to make the score 21-10 good guys. Then ISU scored 28 points in about 17 minutes to about the 5 minute mark of the 4th qtr. what happened? ISU, which has some offensive talent, only had 10 points in the first 37 minutes. Was it more than than the poor tackling? I also thought the hawks were playing too much zone and playing too deep where the ISU wideouts and running backs could catch passes underneath and Lbkrs and make good yardage against the bad tackling?

Did anyone see any other aspects that led to this meltdown? The hawks won but I was expecting more aggressive defense than what took place in this 17 minute span. I just hope they get some things fixed as in was Ragumba taken out of awhile today? It looked like the hawks went to nickle and dime coverage late in regulation at 38-38 to get a couple stops and the big stop in OT.

We just cannot create pressure with our front four so we are left with the choice of blitzing which is also a risk-reward scenario. We are not a great blitzing team normally. ISU has the receivers to spread us out and force our LBs to cover and tackle in space which has been a real issue for a long time. We are reluctant to play nickel or dime because we want to take away the run. ISU got some yards on the ground but it was not between the tackles. It was runs out on the edge and then shotty tackling.

This is no different than why we are getting crushed in bowl games defensively. We lack team speed and athleticism across the entire D as a whole. If teams try to lineup and play a between the tackles power game we are fine.

We need more differences makers but AJs do not grow on trees.

I think our team speed will be upgraded over the next couple years. Our slow guys with experience will be replaced with faster guys with no experience. We'll see how it goes.

ISU didn't substitute and went fast. You have to keep your four DL on the field and it was clear they tired in a big way. This is where I have a problem with Phil Parker. Play the young guys...and take the mistakes. To me, it's better than watching Park sit back there and pick our safeties apart. Rotate the DL...and leave them out there for the series. That pissed me off as ISU kept fresh pass rushers on the sideline, by not substituting...and we obviously don't trust AJ to play on first down. Geez, come on...let him learn on the job. Anthony Nelson was gassed a ton yesterday.

I think the D-line and LB's got tired. There were some blown coverages by the secondary. Hopefully with more game time the secondary will cut the mistakes out. Coaches need to subsititute the D-line at the start of series against teams that run no huddle hurry up offenses. So you don't get caught with guys who were out there two long series in a row. I LB's got tired chasing receivers all over the field. Don't know how much could sub for them.

In a nutshell, we had 23 missed tackles and at least 2 complete busts for big plays. Make the tackles and eliminate those two plays and it's a much different story obviously.

our db's couldn't figure out who to cover pre snap. That lead to blown coverage's all game long. I think rob pointed out we got burned a couple times on blitz' that went for scores. horrible tackling efforts all game long. lack of pressure with front 4. i think the game plan was vanilla, no sprinkles. then, poor performance. these clowns were wearing the same makeup and we couldn't figure out was who and we couldn't sort out their WR packages.

ISU out their 6-5 wide receivers in the slot and forced our linebackers to cover. They do it every year and it almost always works.

Out side of that we got a busted coverage when 30 bit on the play fake. Another when 15 fell down.

Isu did A great job of staying patient and taking what our zone gave them. Up tempo kept us from subbing and quick hitters neutralized the DLine. Kudos to them for a great game plan. When they had the lead and needed to burn
Clock was their downfall.

This is a pretty good explanation of the Northwestern model during the Bacher/Kafka/Persa/Colter years. They kept themselves in games by not forcing things, taking their short gains through the air when they were there, then capitalized when given the chance. Even when Iowa did a good job, it eventually wears on a defense not being able to get off the field on 3rd down...the game where Persa tore his achilles throwing the GW TD pass comes to mind (2010 maybe?).

At the player level tackling was poor, mostly due to having bad position in respect to the direction the ball carrier was taking and then the defenders were not driving through to complete their tackles. Strategically Parker should have gone nickel a little sooner as the hurry up tempo wasn't giving them time to substitute and setup. Hopefully he learned to go man over zone w/ 5 backs sooner next time an opponent tries to shut down D-line substitutions w/ tempo. I would also like to see real chipping on the LOS to disrupt the timing of the quick hit passing.
