Player Rotation - Get Real Fran

Current Recruiting Class Rankings:

1) Kentucky
2) Duke
3) Kansas

87) Iowa

Let's shorten up the rotation.

Maybe that's the point. Since Iowa doesn't have standout individual players, Fran feels he needs to play more guys. Playing a lot of players allows him to look for a guy who may have a hot hand or a matchup that Iowa can take advantage of. This is only a guess on my part.

I think the deeper you go into your bench, in most cases, you may be getting one thing but giving up something else. In the case with Jok last year, you were getting offense, but his defense wasn't nearly as good as others. Speculating about the season, my personal believe is that we have 8-9 guys that can play at both ends and you need to get them on the floor as much as possible to develop continuity. I hate to say it, but the grinch over at Wisconsin does a really good job at defining roles and rotations...and utilizing his personnel. By the time the end of the year rolls around, guys know their role, playing time, and know what the expectations are when they enter the game because they have done it consistently all year.

I think Fran is getting better talent every year. Its hard not to play your most experienced players, and its hard not to play the guys with the highest ceilings. Eventually I think it will pretty much even out. There aren't to many younger guys that can beat out a talented junior and senior. Iowa does have talent on their team.

I agree with this.

Exactly....thank you.

WOTC, there is no way you can keep either Uhl (this kid is going to be special) or Dickerson on the bench. I can't wait to see Uthoff, Uhl, Jok and Dickerson on the floor together. I do think that FM may want to tighten up end of game situations by, perhaps defining that as last 6 or 7 minutes, as opposed to last 3 or 4 minutes, and then ride those guys to the end. But I see no reason to not have an 11 man rotation, if all 11 are B1G level talent; which I believe the folks you listed are. And I think you make a point about last season. There may have been a player or two that were borderline, but, they filled a need, so FM was sort of handcuffed.

I agree with everything you said right up to the "i see no reason not to have an 11 man rotation." I don't see how that works...because you have to take the minutes from someone who most likely beat out 10 and 11. I'm going to pay more attention to what other schools do, but I remember listening to the Tennessee coach talking about wanting to get an 8 man rotation as that builds continuity and cohesion. Playing too many guys, doesn't allow your top 7 or so to develop.

This is just my opinion, but it's something I look forward to monitoring from a competition perspective. What works for the top programs? How deep did MSU, NC, Kansas, etc go?

I've seen some tape of Uhl...and I completely agree with you...can run the floor and appears to have handles, and gets to the rim. When he gets stronger...he's going to be a force. Tough for me to gage on Dickerson though...need to see a point in real competition...at game speed.

I agree that playing 11 would be really tough. After reading Fran's presser though, I don't know who will get cut out. He said for sure that Uhl will play a big roll. Then when asked who will start at the 2 spot he mentioned the possibility of Dickerson playing the 1 and Gesell playing the 2. After that he said AC was in there as well but I found it interesting that he mentioned Dickerson before AC.

Then I read somewhere where White was raving about Ellingson saying how he is a guy who is always open. If we have a lights out 3 point shooter who has a nack for getting open he's gunna be hard to keep off the floor too.

The other thing is I don't think this team really has a superstar that has to be on the court for 30 plus minutes (unless someone has really upped their game from last year that is) so that helps spread minutes as well.

Fran has stated that he plays a lot of players so he can press the other team so that they eventually wear them down. Translation....... Hopefully my more fresher three star recruits can out play exhausted four and five star recruits towards the end of the game.

I remember watching a team with a pretty stable seven player rotation. They were very tough and were nicknamed the Iron Men because of their high level of endurance in playing so many minutes each game. That team made it all the way to the final four and if their star guard hadn't gotten hurt many believed they may have gotten to the championship game. That team was from some city called Iowa City in Iowa somewhere.

I thought you were leaving?

Nice comeback. My comment was an attempt at humor to say that the football board had taken fewer fast balls to the head, so I was going over there to post...it was a joke because of some of the comments here, but humor is very specific and not every comment can be interpreted and appreciated by everyone. I agree with this. And, you said the most important part, "by the time the end of the year rolls around". At this point (start of fall practice), everyone is improved, everyone is looking for a big year, and everyone has a chance to play. Fran is trying to build everyone up and see who he can find that he can depend on. I do think he plays too many guys at times, but I think he may be learning (with the way last season ended) that playing 11 guys will be tough to do over the long haul. Let's see how injuries, suspensions, etc. play into the mix as well. Looking forward to a fun season (hopefully).

I knew you were joking. That's why I was joking back with you but I got 2 big fat thumbs down for it.

This is 3 years overdue. The guy always was a stretch 4, and I think it really held us back in many instances last year playing him at the 3. You need to have 3 players on the court who can all drive, dish, and shoot. This will put either Dickerson/Gesell/Clemmons with Ogelsby/Jok/Gesell and Uthoff/Jok/Uhl on the court all at the same time. We have had way too many bigs on the floor at one time for too long, in the guard orientated game today.

He is very dangerous at the 4, he is quick and very basketball savvy, and should be a much better scorer than Zach and even Mel at that position. I will never forget his Sophomore year, I believe, at Wisconsin where he was trapped in the middle in the lane, surrounded with no possibility to pass the ball, Aaron turned to the basket threw the ball off the backboard, rebounded it and slammed it home. One of the best plays I have seen over the years.....

He was certainly out of position most of the season, and was only an average jump shooter at best. He was best working around the basket, and a marvel in transition.....

Totally agree, Jon, too much of a juggling act with 10/11 players, plus not enough playing time/experience for the starters and first off the bench.....

Pare the rotation down in December...let em fight it out until then

Agreed. Let the best 8 play the majority of the game, giving the 9th/10th man time if needed because of fouls or situational needs.

Think it should be Woody, Gabe, White, Uthoff, Jok, Gesell and the best 2 of (Dickerson, Clemmons, Ogelsby, Uhl)

i would like to see a full court press for 40 min.

Do you really believe this team is built for that? In my opinion, this will be a very good 2-3 zone team with better reaction to extend to defend the 3 than they did last year. Being able to play help side D takes advantage of the length, but that can be exposed when playing man to man with so many bigs on the floor at the same time if extended by a good passing/shooting team that can dribble drive. I believe the other strength on D is the number and type of players allows a mix of defenses between zone and man, just not to play extend full court press.
