Player Rotation - Fran Knows Best

Not sure if I am validating the op or disproving it. It just seems that every big moment, any big shot that needed to be made the ball was either in McCabes' hands or a set was called for him to take the shot. And if it wasn't McCabe it was Olgesby. It could very well be other than Marble, everyone else was a catch and shoot guy. I dunno, I am rambling at this point time to watch the football game.

I think there have been some good points made in this thread about other team's rotations versus Iowa's last season. Yet, I didn't see any discussion regarding style of play. Iowa is one of the fastest teams in the country. That means 40 minutes of basketball is often 40 minutes of wind sprints. Thus, you wouldn't expect Wisconsin to need to sub as often as Iowa. It would be interesting to know if teams like Wisconsin sub more when they play against Iowa because of Iowa's style of play. I understand that there are other teams that play fast, and perhaps they don't sub as much as Iowa, but it makes sense to want your players to have fresh legs if you expect them to sprint up and down the floor. For that reason, I don't think you would ever want someone like Aaron White playing 35 mins a game. Much better to have a fresh Aaron White play 25 to 30 minutes a game.

Todd Lickliter once said at a press conference, in response to a question regarding playing some of his starters near 40 mins a game, that he doesn't understand how a 20 year could get tired. The statement may have some truth if the 20 year old is playing Lickball, but in Fran's system the players need more rest.

As for the lineup this year, I think we all expect that White, Uthoff, Woodbury, Olesani, Gessell, Jok, and Ogelsby will get major minutes. At least Clemmons or Dickerson will also get major minutes, and quite likely both. That leaves the two Freshman. Uhl is much more likely to get major minutes than Ellingson because we are thin at that forward. I think Fran tends to like to go with long lineups so I expect to see three forwards in at most times. If Uhl isn't ready for primetime we will probably see more three guard lineups, most likely with Jok at the three. Ellingson is least likely to play given our depth at the 2, and his injury this summer. However, if Ellingson plays good D, doesn't turn the ball over, and can hit consistently from 3, then he'll get minutes at the 2.

In the end, I think an 11 man rotation during the Big Ten season is unlikely given that I doubt both Freshman will play consistently, and there were probably be injuries. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 9 or 10 man rotation with the 9 or 10th man only getting less than ten minutes a game, such as Jok or Clemmons last season. This seems pretty reasonable to me.
