Player Conduct

In professional sports the athletes are just out of control. You see NFL players continually getting arrested for whatever and I just see that Beasley was arrested for suspicion of ganga possession...again.

I have a simple idea that maybe the players Unions of all sports can come to an agreement on, doubtful, but hey I can dream right.

The leagues should fund their own rehab centers. Force them to go for whatever period of time is allotted based on the crime, or they are simply banned from the sport for life if they refuse treatment.

From there depending on what law is broken and what rehab you must attend and the first offense results in being done for the season; you have two shots and that is it...period.

Now there are situations that you cannot mandate rehab, like shooting someone, or any type of gun crime, but same punishment applies, do it once fine suspension for a year, second time you are simply done.

I just cited NFL/NBA because they are fresh in my mind.

When you are talking about PED's I have already said my peace on that, same testing source across the board and a counsel that determines punishment.

Lastly, here is my last novel concept here: If a player has a degree then the sport sets up a job assistance program, you know help them out, but make it optional. If a player has no degree then help them get their degree, or put them in the job assistance program. Again all options for the player, not a mandate as they did screw the league and got banned to begin with.

NFL = Roid-enhanced testosterone levels in players who are already aggressive. Low impulse control then add the roids and you get explosive behavior. What do you expect.

NBA = the same

NHL = some the same

WWF = all the same with the roids

As far as some of your solutions, only very serious negative consequences ever cure very negative behavior if the subject doesnt want to change on their own.

The NFL already has this ... to some degree.

I agree with this, but seriously I am sick of this being plastered all over the place. Do you think in the short term there would be backlash, but as the culture changes it would benefit all?

FYI-WWF does not count...yeah, serious consequences can result participating in it, but it is still staged.

Yep, WWF is staged. You are right and our whole culture is messed up when someone like Arod gets 10,000 times the news coverage than the scientists who are, for instance, creating new ears and tissue from stem cells and 3-D printers, or the people who every day work to build houses for poorer people, etc, etc

Well we can start by being happy that it was a relatively quiet offseason in terms of Hawkeye players doing stupid things. Unfortunately Cam Wilson decided to ruin his career by being an idiot, but compared to what Iowa fans have experienced in the past this offseason has been gravy (besides fans bickering back and forth about KF).

Yes, I'm knocking on my desk as I type this because I realize there's still a few weeks before Game 1....

My takeaway is that I'm shocked we're still arresting people for marijuana in this country.

An utterly pointless and silly substance, pot...but pretty much harmless. Let Beasley smoke some if he wants to.

Yep harmless, I want the people at my facility driving forklifts to be able to smoke pot during break because they aren't dangerous enough as it is.

On top of it being a Union facility they probably wouldn't even lose their privilege to drive the forklift after they ran over and killed someone...just sayin'

Better make booze illegal again!

I say make it legal, but give companies the right to a drug-free workplace, including drug tests.

Of course. Sportstalent's taking the short view. If you legalize, you can still regulate. The reason why his workers won't be high is because it will be illegal to smoke while operating heavy machinery, just like it's illegal to drink. The same regulations will apply.

Not quite the same, considering alcohol stays in the body for a day or so, compared to up to a month for weed.

I'm no pot expert, but it seems to me that while the drug is detectable in the blood for a month, it's impairing affects only lasts hours. Like opiates?

Yeah, I have no idea, but I'm sure the impairing affects only last hours. I'm talking about testing positive in general could lead you to not have a job. That's what I advocate for.

So make it legal, but treat it like alcohol, yeah that makes total sense, what am I thinking?

Argue with me on this if you like, but you have much more adverse affects from one joint than one beer. The severity of the impairment is far greater.

Here is a concept, if it is legalized, the "dumming down of America" will accelerate and people won't care about anything because they will be "just chillin" as a former ISU football player would say every day that I saw him in our dorm. He was always in a good mood, but was generally an unmotivated and lazy player, but I am sure him smoking weed every day had nothing to do with that.

Regulation is great and all and some people believe marijuana would boost the economy, but hey so would prostitution and legalizing heroin, cocaine, meth, LSD and so on an so forth. All would be wonderful in the world. Hey I am going to go have a 'shroom and go back and operate a crane, I am sure nothing would happen. If we just legalized all those things, there would be no need for the DEA, government could cut some cost there, just a happy savings all around.

Regulation of alcohol and tobacco is really working out. Amazing that those things can be regulated, but other things aren't. Hmmm I am happy paying out of my butt for gas and then watching oil companies make record profits every quarter. Not regulating banks proved to be genius. How people decide what and how to regulate is beyond me.
