Play Off

Will college football ever join every other major sporting event in this country and someday have a playoff? The money that could be made dwarfs the antiquated bowl system and will leave the damn politics out of this crappy way we decide a "national champ"! The day will come when we have 5-6 one loss teams and only some biases will determine who goes to the NC game----- just like we did 30 years ago.
This is the worst run sport in the country.

I am for a playoff ... but very limited participation ... 4 teams ideally, 8 teams max

Dumbest post ever. A playoff would absolutely ruin a great day of football like today. We saw Wisc and Okie national title hopes go down in flames. Under a playoff format each of those games would have been completely meaningless.

If you want to watch a playoff, go pick another sport to follow. There are plenty of them out there. Stop trying to ruin my game.

How so.... again if we wind up with 4-6 one loss teams how does today's results hurt a great playoff system? Match 'em up and play it on the field.... not some frickin computer or coach's poll.... coaches don't watch the games! Computer's don't read the intangibles. Worse run big time sporting event in the country! Not sport, just worse run.

Meaningless, huh? They still would need to finish in the top 8 or so to get into that playoff.

What intangibles are computers not reading that matter?

You totally flipped the ****** on his argument. His argument: today's results wouldn't ruin a playoff system. A playoff system would have ruined today's results.

To a point, I agree. In a playoff system, odds are pretty good that Wisky and OU still get in. Under the current format, their shots at a NC are most likely finished (Wisky's is long gone, OU still has a chance if they win out).

There are a lot of meaningless regular season games that take place now too. There are arguably more meaning less games because there are fewer spots that are played for.

There are more (as in quantity) meaningful games under a playoff format, because more teams have a shot to get in.

There are more (as in quality) meaningful games under the current (or even Plus-1) format.

The above is the definition of "watered down".

Is it really watered down though when most playoff scenarios have 8 teams at the most? Those 8 teams will likely be a combination of undefeated and 1 loss teams. There would probably be two loss teams too some times but if that team wins three games against top 8 teams in a row do they not deserve to be champion?

Like I said, in an 8-team format, OU and Wisky both probably get in. Which makes today's fantastic games essentially meaningless.

I don't disagree that if a 2-loss team can win 3 games in a row against the top 8, they deserve to be crowned. But that wouldn't make an upset like the ones we saw tonight any more meaningful.

if we are talking about 16 or more teams, I'd agree with you, but I am talking about 4 or 8 teams

I actually like the system we have now. If you think about it, it is the one sport that tries to get the best team to be champion. Sure there is controversy, but if you look at other sports you can have very low seeds crowned champion which I think is just as annoying as having teams left out of the title game.

In the NHL or NBA a team who is in the lower half of the league could conceivably win the championship. Last year, Green Bay won the Superbowl with a 10-6 record (not that I minded), while that's a solid record is that really a championship worthy record? Probably not.

At the same time, I don't think a college playoff would make the sport any less awesome either. It would have it's own benefits too.

In a playoff scenerio, you play for seeding and homefield advantage during the regular season.

So, NO, today's upsets don't spoil anything and were not irrelevent.

The BCS system is a self-serving quagmire.

People calling for a playoff with the current conference system ARE stupid. There is just too much inconsistency between the conferences and the polls are FAR too influential.

For instance, Arkansas is a top Ten team and the strong odds are they will not end up with a win against a final poll Top 25 team.

Now, if Superconferences happen that is a different story. But a playoff with the current system would have a similar result as the current BCS system unless you fix the conference issue.

I think the current system raises the most concern in fans who enjoy the off-field banter more than they enjoy actually watching football games. The fact that a team is out of national title contention doesn't void the rest of their schedule. Yes, for some, the number of 'important' teams left dwindles, but importance can be found beyond a national title shot.

Will Iowa ever win a national title with the current system? Not very likely at all. But if I could go back in time and institute a playoff for the 2002 season, I don't think I would. Those Hawks controlled their own destiny from day one of summer practice, just like most other teams do. That ride was magical nonetheless, and I followed every second of it, just like I followed every second of 1999 hoping for one Big Ten win. That's where the heart of college football lies for me.

Do I care that Boise State and Alabama didn't play in 2009? No. If I had my way, we would be in the original system and whoever wanted to crown them and hand them a trophy could. Then you have two schools with all-time cherished squads and perpetual bragging rights, not either alternative (an exposed/deflowered Boise or an utterly embarassed Alabama). I just don't see the need to perfect a game that is perfect in its imperfection of often, but not always, awarding perfection. Therein lies the magic.

I dont care that much about the national title....all I care about is trying to win the Big Ten and go to Pasadena....and if some playoff ruins that...i will never forgive the.sport.
