PLAY OF THE GAME

White gets the rebound up 4 with less than 2 minutes and has it poked away. May have been fouled, but I wish he would have just grabbed and held on as we had the arrow for the jump ball. He had a great game!

That was by far the toughest test that ISU has had in Hilton in years. The refs had to give KU a win there last year.

Actually, the Hawks were up 3 and White got the rebound with only 52 seconds left. Then came the poke, and the resulting break that led to two ISU FTs at the other end. That was the ball game.

Speaking of rebounds, Iowa had 49 of them to Iowa State's 35. Iowa is the better team, a deeper team, and will go deeper in The Dance.

It's difficult picturing this team going deep in the tournament when they fold like a cheap suit so easily.

3 points.....

1. ISU missed 13 FT's (6 more than Iowa), so that certainly added to the rebound disparity.

2. ISU's bench scored more than Iowa's bench tonight

3. Depth is two-edged sword. For every minute that your #9 or 10 man on the roster plays, that's a minute less that one of your starters play.

I don't think this was a battle of sweet 16 teams. ISU lacks athleticism and depth, Iowa doesn't have enough guys that can create their own shot.

Depth is overrated, except for games where you get into foul trouble. You rarely see Sweet 16 teams go past 8 deep in contested games.

To point #3, true depth means there is a small drop off in talent. Between starters and 6-10 players. I agree Jok isn't as good as Marble or Gesell. But it comes down to what your own definition of depth is whether it is a two edged sword or not.

How can we be the better team when our best win was at home against a mediocre ND team and they have beaten BYU, us and won at Michigan. Meanwhile, we have lost to the only two really decent teams we have faced, actually blowing the games late instead of closing them out for wins?

Some of you guys kill me.

Play of the game for me is when Marble had the opportunity to go at Niang and foul him out. Marble didn't because that is who he is in critical points of games..

1. Total shots (FGs + FTs), Iowa missed 44 shots, while ISU missed 42 shots. Also, not all of ISU's missed FTs had rebounds. Remember the guy that missed all 3. Obviously the first 2 didn't have rebounds. Niang also missed both FTs, so there's 3 that didn't even have rebounds.

2. First, it was 19-18. Not significant. Second, bench scoring is an incredibly overrated stat. Who cares who starts and who comes off the bench. ISU had two bench guys play 27 minutes each (and combined for 18 points) and a starter play 15 minutes. Meanwhile, they had 2 starters combine for 8 points. Iowa had one bench guy play more than 15 minutes, and he scored 12 points. It's about how many minutes a person plays, not who plays the first minute.

3. This point has already been discussed above, which means strike 3 and yerrrrr out.

except that of that 9 or 10 man rotation...Uthoff could be starting, McCabe has started, Clemons has started. That means 8 out of the 10 could play major minutes with little to no drop off. McCabe had an off night. Isu shot ft poorly...either way it is a wash and if we play this game on a neutral court 10 times I think it is a toss up each time. Teams that rely on the 3 can beat anyone and lose to anyone on any night. Iowa doesn't rely on the 3 like isu meaning I trust their chances day in and day out. I know records and rankings don't show that but that is my own opinion. I like the team hoiberg has but I prefer iowa's team make up.

Lastly that was one of the best college basketball games I have seen in years.

ISU also attempted 36 free throws to Iowa's 21.

Another key sequence was Gesell missing the front end of a 1-and-1 right after Long fouled out, just after that last media timeout. Instead of being up 5 or 6, the lead stays at 4, and ISU got it two on their resulting possession. That sequence of events changed the last 4 minutes of the game in a big way.

Another big moment was Uthoff missing the jumper with 50 seconds to go and Whitey getting the rebound stolen from him. Iowa was up 3 at that point, but instead of burning another 35 seconds off the clock and likely securing the win, ISU got two free throws at the other end.

#1 That is just dumb. isu got beaten on the boards badly. (period)
#2 Uh, ok. 1 point more. Way to dominate.
#3 You can play your bench with confidence because they still contribute at the same level as your starters. At least Iowa can. Don't follow isu, so i don't know. Also, your starters stay fresh.
