Play man to man and stay on your man, very little help defense

Teams know they can out pass our zone now and they can stretch and contort the zone and really get easy shots with skip passes over the zone.

Skip passes over the zone, something the hawks dont do much of.

Anyway, they are giving up too many uncontested shots late in each half to good shooters.

The buckeyes didnt shoot lights out today but against the zone they seemed to get much better shots.

Win some games or lose them playing man defense.

Why does Woodbury usually follow his man all the way out to the top of the perimeter on D? Seems to me it usually leaves a wide open middle for the opponent and Woodbury can never get back in time to defend any penetration by others. It's not like the big man he's guarding is going to be taking shots from beyond the arc.

I'm sure the smarter BB minds can educate me.

You are correct. I say it to myself a couple times each game. Many times it doesnt burn us but an athletic center can beat woody to his spot or drive by him if he has the ball.

Maybe he thinks he is playing Kaminsky all the time.

OP is exactly right. Stay out if the zone, Iowa's is terrible. If they stay man today, Iowa's playing Indiana Tuesday with first place on the line.

What Woodbury is doing is called hedging the screen. Which is fine if our players could get their defensive rotation down but we never can.

I have been saying the same thing for weeks. We need to stay out of the zone. Teams have figured it out and we are giving up one wide open 3 after another. Even poor shooting teams, like Penn State, can catch fire if they can stand and shoot. I also think our intensity level goes way down when we are playing zone as well. When I see us in it, I know we will be giving up a 3 or a bucket. I just don't get it.

The problem with playing man-to-man is that Woodbury rarely has someone he can guard. He's too busy face-guarding and leaves us no help under the basket. I'd rather have him leave his guy at the elbow than give up layups. He also gets beaten off the dribble on a regular basis due to mismatches.
