Pics and observations from the Open Practice

Some pics I took at the open practice along with some comments to go along with each one. I noticed some things that really jumped out at me: for example Tanner Miller (49) was playing with the first team defense at safety along with Jordan Bernstine while Sash and Greenwood were both held out.

Miller is a true freshman from Mid-Prarie Iowa who was going to be a walk on until Brinson left for a school closer to home. That opened up a spot and Miller was extended an offer. He seems to have made an impression.

I've seen Miller play in high school and run in track...while watching my son who was on the other side of the field. He's a holy terror on the football field and faster than snot. He's a pure athlete and my son is going to have a very hard time getting behind the guy.

Man...was he SEETHING when he saw him out there already. I had to chuckle a little but I kept it real quite.

Thanks for posting, those are excellent pictures and loved the comments below. I think our OL is going to be a pleasant surprise this year, plus it doesn't hurt to go up against a stout DL everyday in practice. Thanks again for posting.

Great job on the photos. It was nice knowing who I was looking at. Really can't wait for season to start now.

Thanks. I think our O-line will surprise also, but I think they will surprise more in pass protection than in run blocking. Given the high praise KF has heaped on the WR corps (and from what I saw Saturday they deserve every bit of it - best looking WR corps I ever remember seeing at this point in Iowa City) I think most of the O's production will be through the air.

What's more, Stanzi has been a new QB since the fourth quarter of the Indiana game. It was almost as if that quarter was an epiphany for him - a real turning point. Had he not gone down I have no doubt that we would have been undefeated last year.

Given the O's potentional and the D's proven production the Hawks are going to be a tough team to play for anyone this year.

I don't know if we've seen enough of Stanzi to make that kind of assumption. Yes, he started fast against Northwestern. But the offense had gone stagnant before he was knocked out, sitting on 10 points for quite awhile. And he started hot in the Orange Bowl, but then cooled off and went back to the way he was most of the season. He had a few other fast starts during the season, only to cool off and throw a pick 6. Now I love Ricky, I think he's a very good QB. But I didn't see a whole lot different about him in the Orange Bowl to say that the Indiana game (4th quarter) was a rebirth for him.

Check out his passer rating in the OB - there was a significant difference.

I have to say that I was not impressed with Gettis either...but felt that although AJ is a freshman (his decision making in the pocket was poor) his passes were much sharper then John Wienke! Wienke threw some real ducks...thought I heard someone at the stadium yelling "Pull" as I was about ready to pull out a gun!

The O hadn't gone stagnant. The bigger problem was that we were facing poor field position.

"We have an NFL first round draft pick (high first round at that) playing DE for us this year. This is huge...really, really huge." Oh ya!

This is going to be so much fun this year! Ricky is a concern, the O line is a concern, but the defensive line is just plain scary. 6 Seconds of hell just dropped down to 4 seconds of hell. The D line will be able to take over some games this year by themselves.

Great pics...I think that first pic might be Ben Evans(?). He's a WR out of IC High (I think). Just a guess though...

Great pics! Thanks for sharing.

I looked for CJ Fed's moped but couldn't find in any picture. Perhaps I'll see it by mid-season!

Thanks for the great pictures and update. This is the type of information that makes this forum special.

Nice job man but the prospect of being a weak line blocking team is a bit alarming. Although I assume that well be fine up the middle.
