Phil Steele Magazine - Iowa

Agreed because of the K brothers, but we had no idea what we had in Clayborn and Ballard. Guys gotta step up big this year.

I think a lot of people knew Clayborn and Ballard would be able to hold their own in 2008. They both showed flashes in 2007, especially in the game at Evanston.

I think the same can be said about guys like Cooper.

I do too. Hopefully the progress being talked about regarding Carl Davis is legit as well.

This years line aint gonna have two 4 year starters playing DT though. It will have a long ways to go to compare to the 2008 defensive line.

no argument here. LBs are better going into the season though. But all of the 2008 LBs ended up NFL caliber.

Derp Davis IMO will be the downfall of kf and our program will not see end of year top ten list for some time.

Quit reminding me of all the talent we had in 08-09, drives me crazy to think we had that talented of team and what could have been. Then to top it off, noticing the talent differential between last year and a few years ago is mind boggling.

One of the Steele stats that has been impressively predictive of team success over the years is "Number of returning OL starts". Iowa comes in fairly low at #94, with 45 total starts among projected starters, 2nd-lowest in the BIG:

Phil Steele - Career OL Starts Returning

Did he get the number right?

Obviously, a simple stat like this can't account for talented but less-experienced players. But that's subjective anyway, and there's no denying that OL is a demanding position where game reps especially matter.

Van Sloten - 12
Scheff - 10
Blythe - 9
Boffeli - 3
Donnal - 3
Walsh - 1
MacMillan - 7

Total: 45

Believe it's correct. Lot of young talent and some depth there but not that many starts.

Yeah...when you look back at last year, it really shows you how young we were in the trenches. Scherff, Blythe, and Donnal had never started a game. The number of starts is important, but so are the number of years in the program. These guys are not redshirt freshmen any longer...everyone but Blythe has had at least three years of development. I really like the way Brian Ferentz had this group playing by game six last year. Unfortunately, when the injuries occurred, there was no place to hide the issue of depth. This year will be different. I really think this is a breakout group in 2013. It's all lining up well if we don't have significant injuries. There are two or three more guys in the mix this year too...Simmons, Ward, etc.

When you throw in the TE groupings we will have, we will be a very, very physical team. It's not all doom and gloom like some believe.

Didn't he have Iowa going to the Gator Bowl last year?

When Iowa was 4-2 that was where I thought they were heading...........didn't see 6 straight loses on the horizon, maybe I should have seen it coming. Those black and gold glasses do funny things to your vision sometimes.:)

I am going to stick with my 7-5 prediction.......I am with boat and b-steen I just do not think it can get any worse than it was last year. Not so much from a X and O standpoint I just think everyone associated with the program last year was embarrassed. For the first time I think KF was truly embarrassed by what happened on the field. How that translates to wins and loses i have no clue, but extra motivation can't hurt.

I think one of the things that made the "K brothers" (nice name, btw) so good was the high motors they had. I see some guys on the line that have those motors this year too. LTP jumps right out there, IMO.

JD - Me thinks that you are too pessimistic.

QB - it is NOT possible for a QB to have a worse season than the one we experienced last year. Simply not possible.
RB - return productive backs
TE - return productive TE
WR - not possible to have worse WR than we had last year
OL - should be actually good helping the RB situation

There is simply no way that an offense can be worse than last year. As a matter of simple fact, if it looks anything close to last year, I would without question remove Ferentz as coach and make a case that it was a for cause termination.

As for the D

DL - can't be worse
LB - return all starters (granted they're not great, but they return)
DB - well.....we'll have to see.

This doesn't mean that there is serious talent on either side of the ball, just that in no way should we be as bad or worse than we were last year.

You have to figure/hope a couple bounces go Iowa's way this year. Anything less than 6-6 is a major disaster, but let's be honest, when you have the history and investment in your program that Iowa has, going 7-5,4-8, and 6-6 in a three year stretch is a major disaster.

Once, long ago, I said something similar after Jake Christensen drudged through the 2007 season. Greg Davis proved me wrong and has shown me that ineptitude to sink to unimaginable lows, and then a little deeper. I dare not challenge him again.
