Yards per attempt 5.6 110th
Average passer rating 101.9 108th

And frankly we have played some pretty bad defenses with exception of a good Northwestern defense

Not going to win championships with that. Maybe it will improve but if it doesn't then who?

The more I look back, I think if BFz wasn't all coked up 2 weeks ago against NW calling 50 pass plays instead of giving Goodson the ball we'd be 3-1 and nobody would be worried about Petras. He'd be progressing slowly and get there just in time to beat Wisconsin in week 8 to win the West.

But...alas, that's the big "what if".

I think if improvement not made by last game, go into spring with position up for grabs. Let's find out who can make plays

That is Petras-fying.

But he will improve. He has to. But there's always a chance he becomes Jake Christiansen 2.0.

He made the one big mistake against Minnesota, but he wasn't that bad. He got the ball out in the short passing game on time and pretty accurately...so we got some YAC. That's step one. He also made a few nice throws. At this point, with Petras, I think you have to work the short passing game and the deep outs. I don't trust him throwing much in traffic...he locks on and guys are simply reading him to get to the ball. With his arm strength deep outs are a really safe throw...you throw it where only our guy can get it. The problem is that teams are trying to leverage the out options, and take that away...and force him to the middle.

He's got to keep taking steps forward. At some point, he's going to relax and just start playing. I'm glad they got Padilla some reps again. It would have been nice if he could have gotten more, but PT Barnum left his starters in, so we didn't get the ball back.

Listen...there is no way Franklin is going to allow us to run the ball. He's going to have 7 at the line of scrimmage...maybe eight. Petras could have a huge game...if he can make some good throws. We will see some big plays against Penn State. The shocking thing about Penn State yesterday is how their DBs were playing...the cushions were ridiculous...and the safeties were back too. There was a zone read with McCaffery and he keeps it...goes around the end...and the corner and safety were still 15-20 yards back when he hit the corner of the defense. It was unbelievable. We have a safety responsible for that within 3-4 yards of the line of scrimmage...when he reads it.

His yards per catch and attempt are as much a function of short pass patterns and receivers not getting a lot of YAC.

The really good passing games in college and pros use what they used to call sit down or hook type patterns against zone defenses or get good one on one matchups against man to man and move the safeties to go over the top.

jNW was playing a lot of zone pass defense and mostly our receivers are on the run through the zone making tougher passes. Guys like Beyer, Smith, and Laporta should be able to sit down in those holes in the zone and pick them apart. Then you get a better completion %, better yards after catch etc.

Best adjective to describe the IA Quarterbacking this year:

1. Chinese Firedrill
2. Chicken with its head cut off
3. North Korean Rocket
4. Stubborn Ferentz Special
5. Mayflower One

I guess I don't understand why he's treated like a high school kid still. He's been in the system 3 years now, and from game 1 to game 4 he hasn't improved. 9/18 against a brutal Minny defense is bad, real bad. All everyone heard was how accurate he is, and what great touch he could put on the ball, combined with the best receiving corps ever at Iowa. Well, that hasn't panned out at all. Some of the mistakes he is making are hard to correct, you either have it or you don't, and right now he doesn't have it. Every other team is willing to sit their starter, and go with the back up when the starter isn't playing well, except for Iowa. Petras has done nothing to earn starting every single game, or from being pulled when he isn't playing well. Nebraska, Penn State, Michigan, all have sat their starter. No reason why Iowa shouldn't do the same if Petras is not playing well. Throwing one good ball out of every 5 isn't going to cut it, teams will stop our run and make him beat them.

I will give Petras to the end of the season before I wave the white flag. The " you either have it or you don't" argument is really influencing me a lot. I grew up in an era where you could be patient. Now not so much, these kids are exposed to so much, so soon, you get a bug eye'd look on your face when a kid can't figure it out. Maybe fair, maybe not, but that is the way it is.

imo, there isn't much behind him so if he can't figure it out Iowa is in trouble.

After watching the 60 minute replay on BTN I feel that SP has improved from the first game. Losing to Purdue wasn't all his fault. Two fumble recoveries by Purdue greatly impacted the game, especially the one when Iowa was driving deep in PU's territory late in the 4th quarter. The pass to Beyer in the 4th quarter was his best pass of the day on Friday, between two defenders and right on target. His short pass accuracy was improved, softer tosses that allowed the receiver to continue in stride. He still has trouble with deeper routes I would agree. Those could get easier if Iowa uses the tight ends more as the defenses have to come closer to the 1st down marker.

The stats which began this thread don't lie. What baffles me most is the inability to complete a single pass beyond 20-30 yds. If I'm not mistaken, Iowa's longest pass completion of the year was a short wheel route thrown to Goodsen out of the backfield. Haven't seen it since, so am hoping to see it again vs Penn St. and the Huskers...both teams which are not bashful about stacking the box if necessary. Stanley was uneven as a Soph, but he also had that game of a lifetime vs Ohio St. Can you envision Petras having that type of game at this point? I cannot. Agreed that if things don't improve, the QB competition should be opened up in the spring to give Padilla and The Deuce a shot.

Until team
Look at his numbers between the last 2 games and the first 2. Iowa wins when they can run the ball and not have to rely on Petras.
Until teams start crowding the box with 8 players and then we will be forced to rely on Petros. What then?
