Pete Roussel from Coaching Search.com tweeted about Iowa job opening

WTF?? I was expecting to open his profile and see that he's from the Florida area and thought, maybe, Kurt is trying to get back in to Florida recruiting. Nope, he coached at Brown and played at UCONN. Well, this is par for the course.

I say we give him a chance...unless you have insight that he is not a good coach you would like to share?

I love the discussion. Everyone complains about the coaching staff and how everything has gone stale, then when KF does make NECESSARY changes, it's all negative from there also. Give the new staff members a chance to prove themselves...and it doesn't happen overnight. We needed to address recruiting. Who would you rather have on the recruiting trail...KAZ, KOK, Soup? Soup hasn't landed anyone and his receivers have led the Big 10 in drops the past two years. We now have young, former NFL players/coaches, and a more aggressive recruiting style. If you didn't like the way BF coached the OL last year, you are watching the same game I am. If Scherff and Donnal don't go down...the team wins at least 7-8. They were coming off the ball very very well. You can't coach depth.

Our linebackers improved greatly also throughout the year...and they focused on teaching and discipline (hence the benching of one of the nation's leading tacklers). I personally like where this is going.

I think this is a another good addition. I think Soup will be missed. It will be interesting if BF takes over the receivers. Maybe KF will coach the OL. He is good at that......no doubt. I like this move and may like more pending the next moves coming. This is another "Tie" from the Patriots that BF had that could pay off big for the Hawks. These younger guys will able to recruit and this guy has some east coast ties which I think is good

His tweet says "Sources tell me Miami (FL) Offensive Grad Assistant DJ Hernandiz will join Kirk Ferentz's Staff at Iowa."

I think too many people believe Iowa should be able pull in a top assistant that they have heard of or has a great resume to their approval.

Can't make everyone happy.

You realize Biels has to bring in the best of the best to even win 3 games in that conference, and make sure he stays there for more than 2 seasons.

This isn't a bad hire for KF, but then again I don't think it matters how well your TE's are coached if the QB isn't coached well enough to get them the ball.

None of us have a clue as to whether any of these guys...

are good coaches or not. When KF hired his first staff at Iowa, no one had ever heard of Joe Philbin or Ron Aiken. Philbin was at Harvard or wherever and he only goes on to coach the best OL in Iowa history, become an OL coach with the Packers, then o-coordinator for a Super Bowl winner and is now a head coach. And Aiken was coaching linebackers at that powerhouse San Diego State when KF hired him. He turned out consistently good-great DL's, including making Jonathan Babineaux from a high school fullback into a DL who has been in the NFL for going on 8 years now. Or taking linebackers like Kampman and Roth and making them productive d-ends with long NFL careers. Aiken moved on to the NFL with the Cardinals as d-line coach. He's likely now looking for work as the Cards sacked Whisenhunt. My pipe dream is that he's coming back to Iowa to coach d-line but he's respected enough in the NFL I'm not sure he will need to go back to college to get a job.
Even Norm Parker was panned by many when hired as being too old and he hadn't had great defenses at that football powerhouse Vanderbilt. My point is that KF has had some success by identifying guys who can coach/teach the game at a high level. We shall see if that comes to fruition.

Just saving money for the big buyout (KF).

The OL wasn't playing that well the entire year. Yes Donnal and Scherff were the best two players on the line, and losing them hurt. But to suggest that we'd win another 3-4 games with them in there is stupid. We LOST to Central Michigan with them in the lineup. There were problems all over the place on this team. We were either dead last, or next to last in every offensive category. Weisman got hurt because he was running into brick walls. If we had a better passing attack, we wouldn't have to sacrifice our RB's every single season.

We also gave up six sacks against N Ill, and while that seemed to get shored up, it seemed more like JVB was taught to get rid of the freaking ball after 2 seconds, with the first second to his primary, and then immediately dump off.

I am glad we are mixing it up. And I will wait to see how the results are on the field, but I was also hopeful for 2012, and it turned into the worst season I can remember. At least in 1999/2000 there was a new staff and didn't know what to expect. 2012 you'd think we could have a little more competence.

I think you are wrong. Certainly the team had difficulties in protection in the NIU game...great...but they weren't giving up sacks in the next 5 games. Remember, NIU just played in a BCS game and they didn't embarrass themselves against FSU. We were 4-2 when those two went down and Weisman had run for a ton of yards...including over 100 at MSU...not too many teams do that in B10 games at MSU. You can't blame our running game in the loss to Central Michigan...we abused them. Our running game severly suffered when they went down against Penn State...and if you are Iowa and you can get teams to respect the run, you are finished, especially with our inept passing game. Tobin at tackle was a sever liability and an area of attack by opposing teams. Having issues at LT is a big, big problem if you haven't noticed...but also having a revolving door at left guard also complicates it further. Don't blame the OL for JVB's issues of targeting the right guys...that's on the OC and the QB. He was getting the protection he needed when Scherff and Donnal were in there.

Or maybe, and just maybe, he's a really smart guy who understands the game really well and he's working his way up the ladder.
