No Iowa. No surprise.

RT @EvanDanielscout: Perry Ellis has narrowed his list: Kansas, Kansas St, Kentucky, Memphis, Wichita State, Oklahoma

Not sure how Fran is at recruiting but so far he not doing well at all and that is with immediate PT available.

well, did we hire anyone with proven recruiting expertise? I do like Fran, but I am getting doubts, but I don't believe it's truly his fault.

This program is at the lowest of the lows. Our crowd sucks, we have no practice facility, and we're going to lose way more than we win.

Aside from paying players, not sure how we get guys to come here.

Reality check...unless you grew up an Iowa fan all these schools seem like a better pick right now. We're going to have to get the guys that care more about PT than going to an established program. Not everyone will be in to that.

So to be throwing out that Fran isn't good at recruiting etc at this stage is ridiculous.

I think there's alot of truth to this, but I'm honestly not sure what to make of Fran's (and his staff's) recruiting abilities so far. We are having absolutely no luck whatsoever unless it's someone who is from in-state and/or lightly recruited, but how much of that is due to how bad we have been the past few years, and how much of it is due to lack of recruiting prowess. I can't say. Certainly the Lickliter era hurt us terribly on the recruiting front, because Iowa's name is mud right now.

If another year or two, things haven't changed, then I will have to start questioning the recruiting. For right now, I'm trying to give Fran the benefit of the doubt, but at some point, we will have to start gaining some steam on the recruiting trail.

Regarding Ellis, I don't expect us to draw much interest from any highly-rated, out of state recruits. So this is no surprise.

Apparently it's a surprise to some. Really people are going to question Fran and staff because they can't recruit against Kansas, Kansas St, Kentucky, and Memphis? Seriously? Folks we are IOWA. What kid with offers from these top schools would pick us given recent history?

For some reason you left out Wichita St. With that said, we just need the one recruit to jump on board to get this thing rolling.

One that has a coach/staff good enough to step up and pull a kid that the big boys are after. ISU has done it in the past and seems to be doing it again, albeit with their transfer recruiting at this time.

I know it's little consolation, but at least we're making some of these guys short list. We definitely couldn't say that the last 3 years. They'll come. Give Fran some time.

A nod to the local school, like Barnes with ISU...call me if he commits to Wichita St...not happening.

Really, I just do not think playing time is a huge carrot for these types of recruits who are so confident they just assume playing time is there for them at KSU or KU ect.,anyway.

Fran needs to break thru in 2012,and hopefully next spring find a solid recruit or two who are not considering top ten schools.

I think if Fran could get one more big guy like Olasani/Katenda/Pitchford in the spring, then cash in on Gesell/Paige/Woodbury/Thok/Staten, he will have laid the foundation for a good team at about the time the natives are getting restless. Timing is everything for a successful run these days, and if we made the tourny in 2013-14 when Mel,Zach and Devyn are seniors, Fran would ink a new deal and Iowa could back to stay.

wow, immediate PT must be a hard sell. I still have faith in Fran, but this is kind of discouraging

Or it's an easy sell and he is getting it from 99.9% of the schools recruiting him. The kid is a 5* recruit. I can guarantee KU, UK, and KSU aren't selling him on being their 6th man for 2 years before he's a starter.

This guy is one of the biggest recruits in this class and everybody is freaking out cause we aren't in his top 6. Come on are u guys serious?

You quoted me in this, but I'm not sure I've said anything about Fran's recruiting.

I'm in the same boat. I didn't expect Iowa to be in his final schools. Hence the, no surprise comment.

Iowa would have been a very very tough sell for Ellis.

Yeah, with the state of Iowa's program anyone that is in a border state with Iowa, unless they really love Iowa, is going to shy away at this point I think. That is why it was so important for Iowa to get someone that will not be afraid to recruit anywhere, especially in the beginning. Fran is doing this, look at where all the offers are, all over the map. Olesani, is the closest kid to Iowa right now and if they can get one regional kid, or border state kid to go with Oglesby, it would send a positive message.
The 2011 class could be the most important, even if it isn't the most talented, reestablishing Iowa in the Midwest would be good and step towards keeping more in-state kids home in the 2012 and 2013 class. If Iowa can land Peter Jok, nobody will remember if we did or didn't get Paige/Staten/Woodbury.
The reality is that Iowa is down for a lot of reasons, but getting players like Basabe and Marble who are not that heavily recruited and seeing what they are doing as freshman is huge.
This staff can coach and makes adjustments throughout the game and that can go just as far as highly ranked talent:
