That brings in the next piece of the facilities puzzle, which has seen practice lights recently installed at Kinnick Stadium. There are two light standards on the east side of the stadium and one bank of lights in both the northwest and southwest corners. The lights are for practice only and are not the same wattage, or as bright, as the lighting used for night games in the fall.
"We chose not to light Kinnick Stadium with the brightness needed for television," said Meyer. "The four poles which are currently installed are only for practice level, about 50- to 60-foot candles. For a game telecast, you need 100- to 110-foot candles. These lights are the newest, green technology from Musco, and are very focused on the playing field, not the parking lots and surrounding areas. They are very focused within the stadium.
"In fact, people will not see those lights on for night games during the season. We will continue to bring in the same Musco Lighting set-up as previously required for televised evening football games."
The BTN or ABC or ESPN pays for all lights during night games, so its not a cost/benefit thing related to additional night games as theorized by JM in the previous thread.

Yep, someone from Musco, with ties to the AD & university, will still be getting a HUGE check per game. Even tho Iowa had permanent lights installed that are good enough for practice, but just not quite good enough for a game. Funny how that happens..............

Great, so they F-ed up the look of Kinnick WITHOUT getting the benefit of actual game lights.

I wonder if the networks take into consideration whether or not they have to pay lighting fees when scheduling a prime time game. I know they're mostly concerned with viewership, but if it tips the scale at all, the extra expense of installing "game" lights would have been well worth it in my opinion. Prime time games can do nothing but help recruiting.

I don't think there are that many Universities with permanent "game" lights. Prime time games probably make so much more money in advertising and such that the cost of paying to rent lights is minimal overhead for the networks. They will always want the best games in primetime no matter what.
The lights were more of a replacement of the lights that were removed during the practice field renovation during spring practice. I don't think its a big deal.
