Perhaps this is what Mandel was getting at...

Hmm I dunno. Depends just how bad. If ISU wins like 2-4 games tops the next 2 yrs then yea I can see him pull that trigger. But if they are borderline 5-6 wins I don't see him getting fired. I could be wrong. Whats coach Mac up to these days anyway?

Last I heard he was the head coach at North Texas... the Ol' Mean Green. That was a couple years ago when I heard that though.

I'm not sure you understand what JH is saying. Mandel specifically said his rankings are based off of recent on the field performance only, and then he goes on to site Kirk's salary multiple times. I think that's the point. If it's a top 5 list of overpaid coaches then that makes sense, but don't claim your ranking the worst 5 coaches based off of recent performance only and then continually use salary as one of your reasons for including one of them. Salary has nothing to do with performance. It means Mandel was using Kirk's salary as one of his reasons, but based on his own criteria he was trying to say that his salary doesn't have anything to do with it. Basically he was stretching to find excuses to explain himself.

I understand its about recent record, however, without his high salary, a 19-19 record in the last 3 years wouldn't put Ferentz on this list, thus he is on the list because of his salary and lack of wins.

Great, so KF is not one of the 5 worst coaches in America. Instead he's, according to some HN posters, mediocre, which is not much of an accolade for some universities (certainly not for a university like Iowa's that has football fans with hubris).

Or has Iowa fans downgraded their expectations of Iowa football?

This is why KF does not belong on this list. Worst does not mean most overpaid. There is a separate list for that, and KF made that one,and I understand why....but worst means worst, regardless of salary.

To just address your question on Iowa fans downgrading their expectations. I think Iowa more then most schools their fans well and let me preface that by saying realistic fans do fluctuate their expectations year to year. This team won't be expected to compete for the Rose Bowl. I don't think any one of us in here would logically argue that. Yet a few years ago we were. Their is a big gap with expectations for what Iowa can realistically do yr in and yr out. This yr Iowa could win anywhere between 3-7 games and it wouldn't be a big surprise. Next year with presumably a returning starter at QB RB and receivers that team will be expected to out perform this year. How much and to what extent depends on alot of things obviously. It may not be what any Iowa fans want but it is what it is...

It's been a few days since the article, and I've read every response to it on here. One thing is clear, kf is still very popular with the hawk fan base in general. This just confirms my point that he could lose every game this year and still not be in danger of being fired. If he has a losing season in 14, then maybe, maybe, maybe there might be like 40% of the fanbase that will call for his head, but no more than that.

I hope you guys know how you look to the nation when you trash a national sports writer. Even though he may not have been totally correct on his statement, he was spot on with his overall analysis of how far the program is fallen in the past few years under kf.

You need to know the rest of the country (not many of course) that is reading your mostly angry, childish remarks to him, are laughing at you. Lol..........you know Fitz is and has been for a long time now.

<<You need to know the rest of the country...>>

1--I don't CARE what others think of me
2--IF I need to know ANYthing, I won't source off this board. But, thanks for trying.

Ferentz has got some newer staff, and hopefully execution and time management won't be so lousy this year. With a redshirt freshman son he's not going anywhere, and he's giving his best effort. Also, his philosophy is not just about w and l's it's about trying to build fine young men ready to face the challenges of life. Before Fry there were plenty of lousy seasons, but there weren't message boards.

Come on man, you don't really believe the lies that you are told like, "the primary role for a head coach is to build fine young men", do you?

He got the contract of 22,000 lifetimes because he had a stellar season and then won the orange bowl. Think he would have gotten that contract if he'd gone sub 500 while developing the finest young men in the nation? Come on...............don't believe the bs that they try to feed all of us.

Lol the bolded part is what completely removes any credibility from your post. Good grief the reason Hawk fans responded so vehemently to his article is because he was not correct on his statement! You just admitted that yourself! He claimed what his criteria was for the rankings, and then used other excuses to lump KF in there. He contradicted himself and Hawk fans called him out on it. Big freaking deal.

So basically in your eyes Hawk fans who are able to look at the coaching situation from a more level headed standpoint than you look foolish for calling Mandel out for being wrong, but when you say his statement was incorrect it's more sensible because you aren't a KF fan???? You're delusional.

You know what else I find funny about your post? You call yourself a Hawk fan, but re-read the bolded part of your post. Even if you don't share the opinions of those Hawk fans who are calling out Mandel, wouldn't their comments be making all Hawk fans look "childish" as you so thoughtfully put? All Hawk fans would include you right? If you classify yourself as a Hawk fan, as you say you do, then you should be saying "I hope you guys know how you're making US look to the nation". Instead you say you and your... Me thinks you just called yourself out and didn't even realize it.

Either you're a Hawk fan and your dislike of KF has clouded your vision so much that you aren't really much of a fan anymore, or you're just a poser who's been trolling for quite some time. Which one is it?

I said his overall analysis about how the program falling under kf was right. Never said his statement was correct.

You are a kf defender. I get it. So, because of that, there really is no reason for me to try to rationalize with you. You're too far gone to get anything that doesn't fit within your narrow kf grid. You aren't alone, though. I would think the majority of the hawk fan base is in your camp. Sad.
