Perception vs. Reality. Iowa's rushing offense in the B1G

I don't think he took another carry after he missed a huge cut back lane, rookie mistake. With a close game you don't risk that, you go with the players that have earned the confidence.

Which is crazy because Bullock is the undisputed king of missed cutback lanes! He runs like a high school back. Always trying to bounce everything outside. I'm not sure if he is scared of another injury or what.

Really good topic. I am once again personally disappointed in the running game. Yes we rack up some decent yardage against inferior defenses but in reality a really good o-line rushes for not 200 yards but 300+. Then we run into tougher opponents we have a MSU 23 yard performance or a 136 yard performance against a poor rush defense.

The blame must be equally shared by the o-line, mostly the guards and center for not playing physical enough and the backs for not seeing the cutback lanes and also not having the desire to finish many runs. The backs run like they want the carries but want to avoid the contact.

By far the most disappointing aspect of this program year in and year out is the o-line as a whole and the running game.

This is not a good rushing team. We average about 125 yds per game in BIG play. Our OL is not very physical and our RBs are not game changers. How is that for reality?

That's the thing Jon, while I agree that Weisman isn't an ideal fit, he's lightyears better at running the football than Bullock is. If Weisman isn't a good fit for a zone blocking scheme, what do you call someone who refuses to cut back and looks to bounce everything to the outside?

Not sure what light years equates to but it cant be 1.1 ypc.

Someone mentioned Bullock catching passes out of the backfield.

I would like to see this more but unfortunately he really has been targeted that much.

In the first half Jake R tried to fit a pass into CJF about 20 yards downfield and Bullock was wide open by the east sideline with no one on him within 20 yards.

I think we have to check down and look at the running backs more for pass plays, Weisman caught two balls yesterday I think. He is also very capable as a receiver.

It kind of drives me nuts that with two backs who can both play other positions Wiesman fullback and Bullock receiver and three tight ends who can all split out wide or even be H backs that the coaches cant find ways to isolate them and create mismatches.

They did get some mismatches \ misdirection going against OSU but then it was just back to stretch plays next week.

I think what most people forget is KF and his style is about execution and assignment football. To a point he has a system. Players in the system are familiar and are successful at completing their assignments. Weisman is likely not the most talented back but he does the small things. He blocks, picks up blitzes, catches the ball out of the backfield and etc. Hence why he plays. A freshman will miss blitzes and cut backs and fumble. Daniels IMO is potentially a Shonn Greene in the making. I hated burning his RS but maybe there was hope to utilizing more. I think Bullock and Weisman make a pretty decent combo. I think this year teams are putting 8+ in the box to stop the run and daring Ruddock to make plays. If Ruddock can keep progressing, things will open up again. Canzeri is whom I feel bad for.

I for one can't figure out the inconsistency in the running game. We were pushing OSuckU all over the field in the first half of that game. Just need to put a full game together.

I really like this team but as a program this to me is the maddening part. Of all the aspects of a program at Iowa I expect more years than not a strong, physical o-line as the backbone of a strong running game. Year in, year out especially in conference that is not the case. Yet we watch Wisconsin essentially have tremendous success doing just this.

Ask yourself when was the last time we put four quarters of offensive football together? How about three? Honestly OSU was a surprise that we got two quarters.

What is the issue? Is it our interior lineman (our tackles are always good), running backs, strength and conditioning?

I think next year Daniels may challenge Weisman for the starting TB role. He's a more natural RB. He seems to have a little more burst and agility than does Weisman. Going forward it'll be interesting to see if one of the redshirting backs/slots end up getting a number of carries next year. I thought Akrum Wadley might end up playing some this season but next he may have the speed and elusiveness that the position lacks. Canzeri has some of that but is lacking something, and I'm not sure what it is but maybe, vision or maybe he just needs more experience.

I think bullock is far better than last year. Seems if there is a hole he is fast to get thru it. To be honest i think they tried to teach mark and bullock this pastis off season, the same way and it helped bullock more than mark. You gotta do what your good at and run whatcha brung.

Bullock is exceptional at hitting the hole fast and grinding out yards after contact.

Also, my dog is a lion.

Iowa does not currently have the kind of running back that we need to be really good. The guys we have, while decent, are not the complete package. I would take any of the three Wisconsin guys right now. Perhaps, next year, Malloy, Hilll or Daniels can step up, but I don't see how they will get significant PT over the two retuning co-starters.
