I have to say...certainly Penn State was the better team...but a couple of things stood out watching that game.
1) For the first time, I actually think Lovie Smith has a clue what he's doing. Honestly, the first time. He's still playing a ton of young players and they are finally starting to make plays and look like a team. They still suck defensively...as they are starting several freshmen, but the offense actually looked competent in the running game. He's sticking to his plan...playing young guys until they become good and in year 4, he should have a very good nucleus of players.
2) Penn State's defense isn't very good...at least now. I know it's only game four...but there were huge running lanes and their DL and LBs weren't getting off blocks well. Illinois shot themselves in the foot at a critical time...but they moved the ball on the ground pretty much the first three quarters of that game. There corners were also playing soft and getting beat.
I think we will be able to move the ball against Penn State...by that game...we should be much more efficient in our short passing game and hopefully our big guys up front are in sync.
