I keep thinking more and more that Wagner is going to start at the 3. At media day there was some talk about Baer staying as a 6th man as a possibility.

The interesting quote to me here was about Wagner, “He’s going to be a guy that we’re going to look to be our lockdown defender,” Baer said. “He’s really quick. He’s the best athlete out there. He moves his feet really well and he’s got length, too.”

As I’ve stated previously it makes some sense to start the defensive minded Wagner and let him go out there and check the opposing team’s best wing player.

The defense thing is why I believe Wagner will start. You already have Cook/Bohannon/Moss starting who will score plenty of points...Garza too if he ends up being the starter. Wagner can be the Woodbury type of player who plays great defense, sets screens on offense, runs the floor and gets rebounds. Fran's motion offense sets a lot of screens.

If Pemsl can move now, his D may be elevated enough to allow him to start, too. Dropping 20 lbs, repairing a couple hernias and getting a year older could make a huge difference. He was just a step slow last year and struggled on the boards. He's more 3/4 size now.

Eric May, (remember him?) was an athletic freak who played above the rim. Cordell, while not as athletically gifted, is also fun to watch.

To me Pemsl is a "wait and see" guy this year. I think now he's had multiple knee surgeries and a hernia surgery. That stuff takes a toll. Plus he might be a bit behind without practicing or playing in Europe. I think Fran said they got 10 extra practices because of the Europe trip and Pemsl would have likely missed all of those as well.

I agree he's crafty down there and just plain strong. He isn't going to jump over anyone but leftys like him that are crafty can get shots up easy enough. Manu Ginobli is still doing it. Those crafty left handed guys have an advantage around the hoop for some reason

Wait, you rag on somebody for commenting about Wagner in a thread about Pemsl but then bring up Eric May? I don't think May and Pemsl could be any closer to being polar opposites as basketball players

I'm not so sure just yet. I could see him starting and Baer coming in and playing more mins. I don't think Iowa will start both Cook and Pemsl along with Garza. But I could be wrong.
