Payne's pain?

On if there will come a time when Matt Gatens’ sprained ankle won’t allow him to compete: “You worry about that, but he just keeps spoiling us. He’s got a toughness about him that allows him to keep going. We’ve had some guys play through some of that. I think Aaron Fuller probably showed a little more toughness than we thought when he was injured. Cully Payne has played through some pain. They aren’t injuries that are going to cause problems down the road or sacrifice health. They are able to play through pain..."

Noting Lick's comment above from yesterday's conference call, I was wondering about the pain Payne is suffering. Assume it's his back, which has been a worry since he announced he was coming to Iowa. I like Cully's intensity and think he'll step up to become the team's leader. Hopefully the back will become less of an issue over the next three years.

there is no padding on a b-ball court and he hits the floor a lot. He wore a sleeve on his elbow for a couple games, i think. Likely due to some inflammation. Tough kid. If he got 1/2 the calls he should have on his drives, he would have double the free throws.

It's 100 percent about his back. He plays every game with a hard plastic brace around it. He has a couple of fractured vertibre that from what I understand don't really ever "heal". He can't do any more damage to them but they cause him a lot of pain. It sounds like it's one of those "until death do you part things".

Cully's back is exactly why we need to find a mature, experienced pg,probably a juco, for next year. The poor kid has ice on it after every game, and I just do not think that lick can stake our whole season next year on that back not flaring up to a point it puts Cully down. Remember Jess Settles? Backs do not generally get a lot better when a Cully has to work on the hardcourt 12 months a year just to hang with all the top talent in this league. If lick gambles on a frosh shooting guard like Brust or Marble to be our backup plan in case Cully goes down, he is setting us up for a 4th straight tough season. Dont do it ,lick.

Culley and Jess have to differnt problems. Cullys issue is non degenerative (unlike Jess) and it's only real issue is "pain managment".

So you are saying that if Cully gets undercut and lands on that broken vertabrae that he will not be knocked out? It happened to him last year in december, and he was done for the year. I would say that could indicate that it could happen again.

I'm not saying that at all. What I'm saying is his chances of doing that again are no more than any other player, or you or I for that matter. I have read on several occasions that the injury while painful is not one that can be made worse by playing on it nor does it increase the likelyhood of future injury.

Hope the back heals but the back issue was known comin' in. Fortunately he will get to rest it sooner than about 120 D1 teams in the country.

I think Payne needs help cause just so lil lick isnt the backup pg, and also to give him a breather here and there. Look at evan turner he had fractured vertibre earlier in the season and still competes, if players went in the game with a "what if....i get undercut, land on my back, etc." they wouldnt be good. I think the good thing is Payne doesnt let his back effect his play, at least not to the naked eye.
