Paul Hewitt

Is anyone else hearing Paul Hewitt's name? I am hearing from a few different sources that are in and around the basketball program. My thoughts on him, would be very positive.

I know he has one final four, and he has had the ability to recruit. He has had lots of 20 win seasons, but not much success inside the ACC, however the ACC is not the Horizon league.

Thoughts? Again, I want someone with an established record recruiting the best kids in the country.

I'd say not bad, not great. I don't think he's exactly an Iowa household name/Splash hire kind of guy. His post-season success is very spotty. Has more sub-20 win seasons (7) than 20 win seasons (5).

Check out Georgia Tech's recent commitments:

Alot of these are from GA of course, but Hewitt also landed a 5-star from Illinois a couple years back, and has a 4-star from Connecticut in his 2010 class, so I think Hewitt could bring in some players.

GT hasn't done a whole heck of a lot since that '04 Title Game run, outside of a couple first/second round tourney losses, for whatever reason, but it looks like Hewitt would give us an upgrade in athletes.

I could live with this, but PH would be a few spots down on my list. I kind of view Hewitt as a Steve Lavin type of hire. Good recruiter obviously, but not sure about his coaching.

In 2009 he had a $3.5 million buyout were he to leave for another college job.
Also GT was on the hook for $7.175 million if they fired him.

Cross him off your list to much coin either way if he left

Paul Hewitt is a horrible in game coach. The amount of talent that he's wasted in the last few years at Georgia Tech is staggering. He's got basically an NBA front line down there and he can't figure out how to get the ball into them. His teams are consistently sloppy and undisciplined, he hasn't had a winning season in the ACC since 2003, and finished last in the conference last year. Do not want.

Paul Hewitt knows how to recruit. From 2002-2010, his recruiting classes break down this way (according to SCOUT.com):

5 Star Players: 7
4 Star Players: 10
3 Star Players: 8
2 Star Players: 1

Recruiting is more than half the battle and Hewitt has shown he can get it done. His buy-out might be high, but I've heard his name mentioned on multiple sports shows as being on the hot seat for not meeting expectations. If he's able to bring that same type of athlete into the Big Ten he might find more success than he did in the ACC.

I think he could be a good fit,as long as he can recruit the midwest like he does at GT. Georgia Tech is a good academic institution also.
I would be fine with Hewitt if he could show he can translate to the midwest recruiting scene seamlessly.

I don't argue the recruiting point, but isn't the whole "hot seat for not meeting expectations" a red flag?

You guys realize he's going to be coaching the guys he's bringing in too, right? He's not a good coach at all, he hasn't had a winning ACC season since 2003, he went 2-14 in the ACC last season. Players regress under him, they don't get better. Most of his recruits are from the south, he most likely won't be able to recruit any better at Iowa than he did at Georgia Tech and he wasn't able to win there, why would he be able to win here?

According to a GT beat writer he has an $8 million buyout and is a big city guy. I think we can safely remove him from the conversation. St. Johns is probably the only place he may leave for.

Just because somebody can recruit kids to play at Georgia Tech, doesn't mean he can get them to come to Iowa. Let's not automatically assume he recruit the same here.

He would be alright, but why not go out on a limb and go after a Forbes, Bardee, Prastner, or even Keno might have more upsdie.

Does not sound like a good fit. Sounds like he could be disconnected with the Iowa community. We have already had that problem with our last two hires.
