Paterno is model for Ferentz at Iowa

There is a tremendous article on Joe Paterno in Sports Illustrated this week. The article points out that Paterno has stayed at Penn State (and turned down lucrative pro offers) because he can be such a strong role model and mentor for young men at a college program. I sincerely believe that he is one of the great heroes in college football.

Kirk Ferentz is a great role model at Iowa and doing the same work at Iowa that Paterno is achieving at Penn State. Ferentz will be the "Paterno of Iowa". I sincerely hope (and believe) that Coach Ferentz will stay at Iowa a very long time, in the mold of Paterno.

Regardless of how this season turns out, you have to be very proud of Ferentz and all of the kids on the Iowa team. It has been a heartwarming season, which I am sure will culminate in some sort of New Year's Day bowl game.

With all due respect to JoePa (and I have a ton for Paterno)...

If Ferentz finishes out his career at Iowa, Ferentz will not/does not need to play 2nd (nor be compared to) anyone. Ferentz will be the "Ferentz of Iowa" and other coaches will be compared to the standard he set..

Good points (without having read the article myself).

Paterno and his wife have donated tons of money to the campus library at PSU.

Ferentz and his wife have donated a good deal of money to the hospital in Iowa City.

They both understand what their schools have done for them and what they mean to them and vice versa. And they know that life exists outside of football. But, simply said, they are both good men who are doing what they love where they want. And the crazy thing is that they seem abnormal compared to the guys we're used to hearing about (Saban, Petrino, etc).
