Passing from shotgun and running with CJ under center

I wasnt counting or charting but yesterday it seemed the hawks hardly ran any play action or straight dropback when CJ was under center. Maybe they didnt want CJ to turn his back to their constant blitzers and maybe CJ just having troubles doing his drop as quickly (Eddie P's comment). Most throws from under center were the quick screens to the sides.

And CJ didnt hand off much when in shotgun although that DMX TD came out of shotgun and was a great call and play spreading out the defense like so many teams do to the hawks.

Did all of you notice the same thing? Are teams starting to key on this?

Should we start running more draws and straight runs from shotgun and still have some more dropbacks and quick throws from under center.

What I didn't like was in the 2nd the RB was way back and it took forever for him to get to the line. We were telling them where it was going and they were stuffing it.

I agree with you, hawks did not call a lot of counter play actions like Canzeri's 75 yarder against Illini, little or no jet sweep action across the formation, no QB pivot to one side and hand back or pitch going the other way.

Are we getting too basic and predictable again?

The athletic turf looked a little slippery when a really hard cut was attempted, Wadley seemed to slip twice trying to get to big cutback holes. Maryland gave us big cutbacks and holes in the first half but they closed them down a lot in the 2nd bringing one more guy in the box, usually off boone myers side.

iowa did as little as possible offensively to get the win. kf said same in his post game - he said if it hadn't been 21-0 they have tried more down field passing, etc as maryland was selling out for the run - with 5 dl and 3 lbs inside the tackle box.......

This is correct. In fact, I found myself chuckling quielty to self as KirFer admitted to going conservative; as this comment in the past would have been enough to start 4-5 different bashing threads.

CJ is forced to throw from the gun because he isn't mobile enough right now to drop back. For 99% of QB's, it is easier to throw from the gun. Iowa would prefer to not show their cards, but PA bootlegs are just not in the playbook when your QB is hobbled.

If that is true, i hope that down the road we see some of the deep pa plays, to try to punish teams for packing the run game. I also would like to see some reverses, or at least give the look for such to try and open up the field for the offense.

Eddie P. said yesterday that C.J. looked very slow dropping back to pass. I think Maryland put eight-nine guys in the box because of a one-legged quarterback. In the second-half, it was just get out of here with a win & keep C.J. as healthy as possible.

Sorry to say we are going to have to 'show some cards' over the next couple weeks to keep this going. This Sat's playbook aint gonna cut it from here on out.

I agree that the hawks need to start keeping opposing defenses off balance by not being predictable. It will be interesting to see if the hawks go basic and pound it straight at the hoosiers or add in some counter plays, reverses, etc,
