Parking/Tailgating in Lincoln

Wish it weren't true. Live there as an outsider and you will get it. If you haven't, you won't. Can't put it any more clearly than that. By the way, crazy people don't use the word "incredulity". That takes sanity to pull out of the pocket.
The hardships of being in Nebraska as an Iowa fan must have been horrific.

Never Forget

Seriously what? As an actuary, you of all people should appreciate the numbers. If you've never lived there, then check out of the conversation as you have no idea what it is like to be a non Husker in Huskerland.

This.

I currently live in Grand Island, Nebraska and am surrounded by Husker Nation. As a Hawkeye fan, it never ceases to amaze me at how Husker Nation treats outsiders, especially those from Iowa. They find it unbelievable that someone could live in Nebraska and not be a fan of their beloved Huskers.

Most Husker fans I know here in Nebraska don't know the difference between Iowa State and the Univ. of Iowa. They say, "Oh, you're a Hawkeye fan? What the heck are you doing in Nebraska? Dude, I'm still ****** you guys pulled that one out against us in 2009..." They don't know how to comprehend that there can be more than one FBS program in a state. They balk at the fact that I have never been to a Husker game in Memorial Stadium, and cringe that I travel 6 hours to Kinnick to watch the Hawkeyes play several times a season. Most of these same fans have only seen their beloved Huskers at Memorial Stadium 2-3 times....ever.

They don't understand that my wife and I both went to the UofIowa, and that we met and fell in love there. They don't understand that most of my adult friends are associated with the UofIowa. They don't understand that the UofIowa is a huge part of our lives. They'll simply never understand that we are Hawkeyes, and that just because we live in Nebraska, we are not going to rescind that and all of a sudden declare our allegiance to Husker Nation.

And still they say, "Oh, just watch one Husker game at Memorial Stadium, and you'll forever be a fan!"

Um, no, I'm a Hawkeye.

While I've never seen people lose their jobs or any kind of physical violence, I have been shunned and my Hawkeye lawn and vehicle decorations have been messed with. Whenever we are invited to a Husker watch party, they don't understand why we have to politely decline the invite so that we can instead watch the Hawkeyes.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate their love for their football team. But my God, don't be so blind to not realize that there are 119 other FBS teams, and even more FCS teams who have their own fans.

In summary, it sucks to be a Hawkeye fan stuck in Nebraska. I only have two more years here, and then we're out.

I will be at the game on Black Friday and hope you other Hawkeye fans that are also going have a great time. This will be my first game at Memorial Stadium, and I can absolutely guarantee that I'll still be a Hawkeye no matter what happens after the game.

First, BaryGarta, I enjoyed reading your post, but I agree with ShockRerun in that 1) I seriously doubt that anyone has been egged and/or fired from their job for not being a Husker fan and 2) that it must have been soooooooooo hard for you to live behind enemy lines. Oh, the horror. # sarcasm

Edit: First, I personally cannot stand the Creighton b-ball (or baseball, or whatever) fans who act like they are Husker football fans, makes me sick, btw. Second, regarding the NW/NU game, a lot of our fans are elderly, and the leave EVERY game early. The stadium is in a part of town that makes access easy, but it takes a long time to get in and out. If they were leaving with 3 minutes to go, that means that they stayed longer than normal. You will usually see people starting to leave early in the fourth quarter.

Coolsplatz, back to your post, thank you. Thank you so much. Honestly.

Part of it is, we expect that the majority of the people who live in state are natives and fans of the program. Call it ignorance, if you will, but it is what it is. I'm sure that you get some good natured ribbing, but with rare exception, if you act like a decent human being, you will be treated as such. As much as we love our football, that is all it is, football. Most of us have jobs, families, lives, which are more important.

And I will agree on one thing, if you ever go to a game at Memorial Stadium, you may not turn into a Husker fan, but you would enjoy the experience. It's different than most college football atmospheres. Tough to explain, it's just different.

As for the bolded, it explains perfectly how Husker fans see Iowa and its fans: We don't care. We have never cared. Up until we joined the Big 10, Iowa is just another team in close proximity that we played a few times in the past. Just like Wyoming, or Colorado St., or Minnesota, or UNI, or any directional Illinois school, or South Dakota St. I spent most of my time on Huskerboard.com, and if you compare, there are about 20 times as many threads on this site dedicated to Nebraska as there are on Huskerboard dedicated to Iowa. I've never understood Iowa's fascination with the Huskers. Honestly.

More than anything, your post and BaryGarta's illustrate just how incredibly thin skinned Iowa (and Iowa State) fans are regarding Nebraska. I have read the numerous posts on this site where Hawk fans are just beside themselves that NEBRASKA media outlets dedicate most of their sports programming to Husker football. They become personally offended that we have the audacity to cheer for our team, and to take pride in our program, and it's rich tradition. Really, y'all act like Nebraska is a territory of Iowa, and we should be thankful that you allow us to have a university and a football team, one that should some how pay homage to the great University of Iowa that we are even allowed to exist on our own.

Y'all act like your Husker fan neighbor saying (in good fun), "Can't wait until black friday, we're gonna smash you!" is the same thing as him walking into your house during a family dinner, and he punches your dad in the face, calls your mother a whore, pees in your baby's bottle, and takes your wife back into your bedroom and makes love to her.

If you all are that irrational and thin skinned, I would suggest not coming to Lincoln for the Iowa/Nebraska game. There are going to be a lot of people wearing red, you will hear a lot of "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!, GO BIG RED!!!!!" chants, and you may get some good natured ribbing from Husker fans. If you can keep your composure, not act like an a-hole, and not end up in a mental institution, you are welcome to come to Lincoln, hopefully you will enjoy your time here, even though hopefully (for us) you go home with a loss.

But from what I have seen from many Hawk fans, that just won't be in the cards. You are going to find anything (and if you can't find it, you will just make something up) to be offended by. You act like we are supposed to make concessions to you and stroke your fragile Hawkeye egos, even when you live in our state. The funny thing is, you and the Clone fans are the only ones with that problem.

I am not going to call Barygarta or Coolspatz liars, as I don't know their experiences or circumstances, and I have no reason to doubt them. But I will say I have lived in Lincoln for 33 years and have never been shy about showing my Hawkeye colors. I had a Hawk painted on my back board for years, and have flown the Hawk flag many times without receiving anything more than good natured ribbing. But then again, Lincoln is an island of sorts, with many people from other states, so the natives are more tolerant here than in other areas of the state.

But yes, there are some jerk fans here, just like every other place I have visited. And I am sure we all know of at least one Iowa fan we sometimes wish wasn't ... LOL

Go Hawks!

Exactly, it is just sports. People in nebraska arnt snarling monsters completly consumed by football. Just like Iowa, people are people. Its just a game, people will root for their teams and life goes on.

I couldn't have said it any better, but I'm glad you did. This is exactly what I was attempting to allude to: most Husker fans that I know are incredibly arrogant and ignorant of the rest of the collegiate football world.

I want to stress that I know not all Husker fans are this way, as I know there are a lot of Hawkeye fans that give us a horrible rep as well. I am not oblivious to this.

I do look forward to the game in Memorial Stadium, as I always enjoy seeing other collegiate venues. I am not an obnoxious Hawkeye fan, and I doubt I'll end up in a mental institution. We're going to be tailgating with a lot of our Husker friends, and I'm sure there will be a lot of good-natured ribbing going on. That's fine, that's fun.

You make it sound like I'm super scared and very intimidated by Husker Nation and all of their red. All I was saying is that I understand why it can be hard to have to deal with a lot of Husker fans in Nebraska, especially if you're favorite team isn't the Cornhuskers.

Like I said before, I look forward to the Black Friday game, and I'm sure it'll be one hell of an experience, whether it's a Hawkeye win or loss.

Don't misunderstand me, I hope that are NOT scared and that you enjoy your experience in Lincoln. I'm sure that you will. As for the bolded, you mentioned something about Husker fans being arrogant, but from a Husker fan's point of view this sounds arrogant to me. For the life of me, I cannot understand how Hawk fans are so beside themselves that Husker fans have the "audacity" to support their team, especially inside the state. Some of you act as if you are personally offended that we have the gall to actually cheer for our state school.

I couldn't have said it any better, but I'm glad you did. This is exactly what I was attempting to allude to: most Husker fans that I know are incredibly arrogant and ignorant of the rest of the collegiate football world.
I would disagree with you. Back when I had more time to spend watching football (other than the Huskers) I was very well versed in football. Like all fan bases, many Husker fans are very aware of the rest of college football, some are not, some are just casual fans, and some are bandwagon fans. I just don't understand how our ambivalence towards Iowa is the equivalent of "arrogant and ignorant." Face it, we have played 5 games in the past, what, 50 years? Those games meant very little, why should we care about you, and conversely, why should Iowa care about Nebraska? We care about teams that stand in our way of our goals, or ones that have put it to us. Up until now, Iowa is not that.

Now that we are conference foes, I am hoping that these games carry some meaning, more than just bragging rights. Unfortunately, this year's game will mean very little.

See you Friday.

There are too many different posts by too many different posters to quote them so I will just answer with a few counterpoints, and in no particular order. First, the Memorial Stadium game day experience isn't any more or less special than any other packed college football stadium from a top tier program. Everyone gets major goosebumps and feels the electricity at all of these locations. It is special to Husker fans because, well, it is their team, their stadium. That doesn't make it different. This point in and of itself speaks to the arrogance of the Husker nation. To think that the experience with your 80k fans is somehow different and/ or more special than the fans that pack Kinnick, or the Horseshoe, or any other major venue is ridiculous and self serving.

Two: Not fascinated by the huskers. More appropriately stated- disgusted by the arrogance of the Husker nation. There is that word again- arrogance. It is a theme. The reality is Husker fans have a much higher opinion of themselves than they should. They are not these "great" fans. The garbage about the elderly leaving? Watch the tape of the game. Didn't see too many walkers and canes being used to get those alleged fans up the steps of the old grey lady.

Third: What have you done for anyone lately? Husker Nation acted like you would roll into the big ten and dominate. Arrogant. (wow I sense a theme that most of the rest of the world would recognize). People in Omaha were wearing Big Ten Champions tee shirts in the summer before your arrogant coach and arrogant players ever played a conference game in the big ten. I can assure you that no self respecting Hawkeye fan would ever have the arrogance to wear a shirt that referenced something we had yet to earn.

And yes, people get fired from jobs in Nebraska because they refuse to "tow the line". That is reality. (By the way, when I said egged, I didn't mean eggs were thrown at their house, I meant egged as in verbally)

I wake up every morning and know that my love for the Hawkeyes is behind my love of my family, my God, my country, my health, and many other far more important things. The Hawks are not "front page material" in my life as it is filled with far more important endeavors. Like the Omaha media, the many many Husker fans I know and have met likely would have a hard time saying the same.

Fascinated? Nope. Disgusted.

Please show me where I said that game day in Lincoln was any better or any more special than any place else? I said that it was different. It's a differnt city, a different atmosphere, different traditions. Things on gameday are handled differently in Lincoln than in any other place that I have been for a football game. There is not great tailgating, unlike many other venues. The stadium is located, essentially in downtown, right near some of the better bar and restaurants, so there are different things to do.

Which perfectly illustrates my point: Hawk fans are so fascinated with the Huskers, if we don't legitimately do something to p*** you off, you will make up things to be upset about. Thank you for proving my point.

ely stated- disgusted by the arrogance of the Husker nation. There is that word again- arrogance. It is a theme.
It's a theme, one only propagated by Iowans, both Hawk and Clone fans. You are the only two fan bases that widely talk about the arrogance of Husker fans. I've talked to fans not associated with state of Iowa, and the majority of them have had nothing but good things to say about us.

The reality is Husker fans have a much higher opinion of themselves than they should. They are not these "great" fans. The garbage about the elderly leaving? Watch the tape of the game. Didn't see too many walkers and canes being used to get those alleged fans up the steps of the old grey lady.
Interesting. When I was watching the game, I noticed that the game was shown on TV. I did't see that the cameras were fixed on the entrances to the stadium. Is this another "mistruth" spread by Hawk fans? Probably. Fact: I have been to many games in Lincoln, and usually about half way through the 4th quarter, the stadium starts to empty out, regardless of the score. I've sat through many blowouts where the stadium was half full in the 4th quarter.

Third: What have you done for anyone lately? Husker Nation acted like you would roll into the big ten and dominate. Arrogant. (wow I sense a theme that most of the rest of the world would recognize). First, it's funny, I live in Omaha, yet I have never EVER seen any Nebraska fan wear a Big Ten Champions tee shirt. Never. Ever. Is this another lie?

What have we done lately? Let's see, in the previous two years, we had played in back to back Big 12 championship games, losing by a total of 4 points. We had 3 All-Americans returning on defense, and some good young talent on offense. We stepped down from the first or second best conference in football, to one that is 4th or 5th best, so there was no reason to think that we would compete for the conference championship. Many unbiased national football media members said the same thing, but I guess that Iowa fans know more than they do? Unfortunately, we crapped our pants too many times.

As for our coach and players being "arrogant," what should they have done? Said "Well gee, shucks, this is the big bad Big Ten, we have no chance to compete, maybe we'll just shut down our football program." I realize that you have no idea what you are talking about, but its not arrogance, its confidence. Show me a coach or a player that has no confidence, and I'll show you a loser.

And yes, people get fired from jobs in Nebraska because they refuse to "tow the line". That is reality.
No, that is what, we in reality, call a lie.

(By the way, when I said egged, I didn't mean eggs were thrown at their house, I meant egged as in verbally)
Yes, because Hawk fans are so angelic, they would never, ever enter into friendly banter with a fan of another team, would they? Please, give me a freaking break.

This is where Hawk fans like you need to get thicker skin.

I wake up every morning and know that my love for the Hawkeyes is behind my love of my family, my God, my country, my health, and many other far more important things.
Uhh, yeah, right, and Husker fans care nothing of those things. Give me a freaking break. We all have jobs, families, friends, bills to pay, and real concerns. I see that you like to throw around the word arrogant, and I believe that this statement is the epitome of arrogant. All hail Iowa fans

The Hawks are not "front page material"
This is the only true and accurate statement in your entire post.

in my life as it is filled with far more important endeavors. Like the Omaha media, the many many Husker fans I know and have met likely would have a hard time saying the same.
Well, I would guarantee you if Iowa had the same level of success and the same tradition that teams like Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Alabama, Florida, USC, or LSU has had, you would be a much bigger story, and your "fans" would place a little more importance on your football team. Guaranteed.

Fascinated? Absolutely. And envious.
fify

The above is a true statement. It is proven by all of generalizations and lies you have made in your posts.

See you Friday, have a nice week.
