in today's Doc blog in the gazette were interesting.

When asked about Fran and Siena last weekend at the FF,Matt Painter of Purdue said that Fran's success at Iowa will hinge on recruiting.

He complemented Siena on how they played but added that when they studied Siena, it was apparent that Siena had the best talent in that league and that allowed them to play fast and increase their possessions.

He pointed out that when you have the best talent you want more possessions, but that coming into the Big Ten could be different.
Left unsaid was that Iowa does not have the best talent, and if they expect to play fast like at Siena, they better upgrade the talent quite a bit.

Painter knows that guys like himself,Matta,Crean, and Izzo are going to be hard to beat on the recruiting trail, and that Iowa fans might be disapointed unless Fran can outrecruit them....please get some super-recruiters on staff,Fran!!

But like Fran said they dont need 4 and 5 star players they need players that players that can play like 4and 5 stars. I think his success will hinder on recruiting not getting the best players but the most intelligent and athletic players.

That is a concern with Fran. He won because his players at Sienna were better than the rest of his conference. That is not going be true at Iowa for the forseeable future. On the flip side, this likely means McCaffery values having good players, and will try to go find good players. Whereas Lick valued his offensive system and style of play and did not seem to think he needed top players to win.

He's absolutely correct! But, that's something that everyone knows - it all really comes down to recruiting on one hand and being able to devolope talent on the other. The good thing about basketball is that it really only takes 2 or 3 studs and 3 or 4 quality role players. I really think that if they are able to come up with an inside presence and a quality point guard that can run the offense and distribute the ball, we'll be competitive.

What?? So you're saying the team with the better talent is better. I never thought of it that way : ) He had better players at Siena because he recruited better players than the coaches in the rest of the conference. They were all on the same recruiting level. At Iowa he is on the same level as the rest of the Big 10, so he will get better recruits than at Siena.

Yeah, because Mr. Davis obviously had the best players when he was at Iowa.

It doesn't take THE BEST players. It takes skilled players with a good coach that knows how to best utilize their talents and put them in the best position to succeed. You can win in the Big 10 with 1 or 2 really good players and a bunch of role players if you have a coach that understands this. Lickliter never did.

I have every confidence in Fran. At every stop he's been at, his teams stunk when he arrived and by the time he left, they had the best players in the conference. He'll get it done here, too.

Painter, What a revelation, better players you say? Huh, guess I would never have thought of that!
Of coarse Iowa needs to get better players, Todd couldn't attract better players because his style and to some degree his personality was not attractive to potential quality players.
Iowa now has a bonified players coach. Fran said it himself, his players loved playing for him, It won't take long for current players to start getting it out that Fran is a great coach and fun to play for, that will attract the kids that are on the fence about Iowa. Iowa being a Big Ten conference member should in itself bring in a higher quality player.
But Painter is right..better players=More wins!

So who had better talent last year in the NCAA tournament? OSU or Sienna? I am just trying to figure it out, because I know OSU was loaded last year and they lost to sienna in the first round.

Fran is a great coach who will his type of players into Iowa. His style is press and up-tempo offense. He also will slow game the down as well, and use sets like any other coach. The main factor that sets him apart from Alford and Lick is he gets the BEST out of his players, and he develops relationships with them better than either of our two previous coaches could. He will go to bat for his kids and he will work his @ss off until they are good students and even better athletes.

You will see an improvement in year 1 under coach Fran that is for sure.

Curse you for making the point I was going to make.

Hasn't Siena beat at least one Big Ten team in the NCAA tournament over the last few years? Using Painter's logic, that means he was recruiting better at Siena than the Big Ten team(s) he beat? If he can outrecruit Big Ten teams while in a lesser conference, shouldn't he be able to outrecruit Big Ten teams while in better footing?

As we already know based on our past 2 head coaches, success at the mid-major level doesn't necessarily translate to success in a major conference. However, FM also has assistant coach major conference experience (something our previous coaches didn't have). Additionally, Fran appears to be going after stronger staffs than his past two predecessors at Iowa (which should help in recruiting).

It doesn't take a genius to figure out you need to recruit well to win.

Didn't you forget the exclamation points here?? :D

There's no real revelation here. Painter is obviously taking a back handed slap at Iowa infering that nobody could recruit any decent talent here, because it hasn't been done recently. Iowa fans know different. We've seen it, albeit a long time ago. Once the word gets out amongst good prospects that there is a coach at Iowa who is a players coach and runs a fun, up tempo offense in a major conference...they will come, and success will follow. I have every confindence that coach Caff will get the job done!

Agreed. This strikes me as Painter peeing on the turf of Big 10 recruiting in an attempt to mark territory. Hey, Matt, there's a new dog in the league and he's coming after you.

Evidently Painter hasn't looked out his freaking window.

West Lafayette is the civic equivalent of a diarrhea attack.
