Packers.com Hawkeye lovefest

Wow, never heard of this guy. He really gushed about what kind of player comes from Iowa. Does he talk this way about every player/school?

This is fantastic! They should put this on a flash drive and show it to every recruit they talk to.

If they're showing the clip to the recruits, does it matter what kind of hardware the clip is located on? :p

Stephen from Black Earth WI asks... "Vic... what's your impression of Mike Daniels?"

Vic replies...

"I can tell you what Mike Daniels is without even having seen him play. I can tell you he is tough, hard working, ultracoachable, dependable, schooled in the fundamentals of the game, overachiever... and I know all of that by knowing one thing about him. He played at Iowa.

It seems like that is the only kind of player Iowa turns out. Everybody wants an Iowa kid, because Iowa kids play hard and don't give you any guff.

If you are in the late rounds and don't have a guy you like... go with BHA...Best Hawkeye Available because no coach, and no program is more respected than Kirk Ferentz and Iowa."

ummm, can we make that the recruiting pitch we give every player we go after, wow! True though, you hear that everytime someone talks professionally about Iowa Players.

I still don't get how Daniels fit what the Packers do. I could easily make a argument that Binns is a better fit. Capers/McCarthy/Thompson know what they are doing so they get the benefit of the doubt.

They will probably use him as a DE to rush the QB on passing downs.

I guess the way I looked at it is they're getting a bigger bodied guy in Daniels that has a history of getting to the QB. He's also a guy that could probably fill in as a serviceable backup for some of their special package stuff on D, like the 2-5 set they run some.

A 280 lbs. run stopper as a DE in a 3-4? Naaaah, not buying it. They really must see him as a guy who can occupy blockers so the the linebackers can do their thang.

Yeah, I think the primary thing they'd be looking for is a space-eater. Their D is more predicated on the OLB's getting to the QB. He does have the ability to get to the QB as well which is a plus for the bigger bodied guy (between he and Binns).

I never said he would be a run stopper. I said he would be used mostly on passing downs to get after the QB.

Dude, I get what are saying, imo, he is undersized for a 3-4 front, he isn't a 5 technique guy. Clearly, Thompson/Capers see it the way you and Hogeye see it they plan on using Daniels quickness and his ability to get up field as a way to rush the passer. I'm wrong, you and Hogeye are right I am just curious how it is going to work.

Being a Steeler fan watching Kiesel/Smith I know how DE(s) in this system are suppose to work......Looking at the future for the steelers with Hood and Heyward they are essentially pretty much the same type of guy as Daniels so I can gauge Daniels progress by Hood/Heyward.

Unless I am completely lost in the conversations, which is possible, I think I agree more that you think. I think his ability to get to the QB at Iowa was more of a bonus than the driving reason they drafted him.

The GB scheme defensively is more predicated on the OLB's getting to the QB than the DE's. Their DE's are more space eaters. Especially when they get into the 2-5 package.

Yeah, they're the enablers. Most casual fans don't know who Kiesel or Smith are other than maybe because of the heralded beard. Yet they're extremely important parts of making that D work so the LBer's and even Polamalu can get to the QB.

What I don't get is how the reasons you would think Green Bay would want him with their system (all the ones mentioned previously on this set of posts) doesn't seem to fit his skill set. The one thing he wasn't at Iowa, the one thing he was poor at at Iowa, was being a space eater. When you look at his skill set, high motor, never stopping, disruptor;that says to me a rush dt on 3rd and long or a rush tackle in a 4-3. Not sure I get this one. He makes more sense to me being on the 49ers, course I guess that could be bias since i'm a niners fan.

In the end what it boils down to is that GB believes he's a good fit. You have to bear in mind that what he was asked to do at Iowa wasn't what he will be asked to do in GB's D, unless they bring some 4-3 packages back.

Also, I don't think it's fair to say he was poor at it...it's not like guys ran through his gaps at will on run plays.
