Pac-12 Tournament held at MGM Grand Hotel-Casino

Apparently this is old news, but I heard about this today. I'm not sure how I feel about this.

Pac-12 brings basketball tournament to MGM Grand starting in 2013 for three seasons - Las Vegas Sun News

What's your concern? Admittedly Vegas just does not stack up as exciting of a place to visit as Indianapolis, but it has a hotel room or two available and can host athletic events. Guess we'll see soon enough whether it draws better than the Staples Center. For some reason I suspect it does ...

My concern is that the NCAA doesn't allow national tournament events to be held in states that allow sports betting, but a member conference is allowed to hold their entire conference tournament inside a casino. It seems a little bit hypocritical, but I guess I should expect that with the NCAA.

I bet we see another 75% empty arena for most games, the Pac-12 region just doesn't care about college sports like other parts of the country.

Especially when none of the member schools are from the state of Nevada.

But the casinos and bookie joints can't feature any college sports events taking place in the state. What a relief...

The ACC holds there conference in Greensboro. Big Ten in Indianaopolis, Big Twelve used to have theirs in Kansas City. Have you ever been to Greensboro, Indianapolis or KC? yikes

Vegas is a better option.

<<Vegas is a better option>>

Compared to Atlantic City, sure. But college conference tournaments aren't about glitz, glamor and lights.

Yep. I was just making the point that this is the 5th year in a row the WCC has done this. They don't have any teams in Nevada either. It doesn't seem to be a problem for that conference.

Assuming LA can't fill the Big Stapler for the PAC 12 BB Tourney... why not put the Tourney in Vegas?

These college kids work and play so hard and deserve to play in front of sold out arenas. Better yet that these arenas are filled with fans that gamble and drink and smoke (well, maybe not smoke... does Vegas allow smoking in there casinos?)

On a side note does Iowa allow smoking in their casinos? Heading back to the Hawkeye state this summer and have learned to play Black Jack and count cards... hoping I won't have to suffer thru second hand tobacco smoke... marijuana on the other hand.. all the while making earning some side coin.

btw what up with Iowa not legalizing medical marijuana? Officials concerned that it's going to affect the health of adolescents... do not these doctors trust our medical system? (18 states and counting). Everything really works well with legal, prescription drugs!!

No one cares about the PAC 12, where they hold a BB Tourney, the NCAA, Las Vegas or gambling when it comes to college BB or FB... especially the NCAA because it's a sham organization that will soon have lived out it's life and be no longer.

They are about putting butts in seats and TV ratings.

No, they are much more about making money and ensuring "Big Name" teams are highly seeded and highly seen. The conferences and NCAA could care less about butts in the seats or even TV ratings. If the devil showed up with a deal paying them more money than ever imagined times 10 (or less) and the only caveat... the amateur "student-athletes" must play in empty arenas and with no TV...

the deal is done and we can all go to hell.
