Pac 10 v Big 10 to START the season?

Part of me says no...going to play in the Rose Bowl is a special, special thing...this could cheapen that to some degree.

I agree, to play there any other time than Jan. 1 would cheapen the Grandaddy.

I disagree, UCLA plays all their home games there and I don't think it cheapens it for them when they make it because playing there on Jan 1 means you won your conference and had a great season.

Unless a Big 10 team is playing UCLA I don't want them playing in the Rose Bowl if it's not in the post season.

How many of those pre-conference home games has UCLA playing a Big Ten team?

The fact that the actual Rose Bowl has become the second-preferred destination for Big Ten teams has cheapened it 100000000000x more than playing a game in the same stadium in August.

I understand what you are saying, but let's say they were doing it this year with Stanford playing Purdue, now Iowa goes on and wins the Big Ten and goes out there this coming January to play Oregon St, you wouldn't be excited?

To me in early September it is just a game at the Rose Bowl and wouldn't have the same feel as the actual Rose Bowl game.

Actually, a knock that I've seen thrown around on ESPN threads by other conferences is that Big 10 fans are so behind the times and set in their traditions that they would rather play in the Rose Bowl than the NCG. Which actually seems to be true. You don't hear players in the Big 10 say their goal is to go for the NC. They all say they want to go to the Rose Bowl.

Kirk Ferentz said it himself last year but this is because Kirk is the type of guy that likes to focus on what he can control. He knows that if he wins every game...he'll be in the Rose Bowl...at least. He doesn't want to rely on pollsters to determine whether he achieves his goals or not.

As to the original topic...why not? I don't think you are cheapening the Rose Bowl in the last...it's the Grand Daddy of them all...it cannot be cheapened by a simple preseason game any more than Inter-League play cheapens the World Series in baseball.

Interesting Idea. But how can so many overlook the obvious.

Since the Big Ten always goes to Pasadena, giving the PAC 10 a defacto advantage in the Rose Bowl... how bout doing this early game in Chicago? ...or Detroit...or Indy?

Let's see these West Coast teams (and next, the SEC teams) man-up and come to OUR house and play.

Screw them. They went about and agreed to a policy whereby they chose an at large non-BCS team over either a Pac Ten team or a Big Ten team in the Rose Bowl. That is the bed they are going to have to lie in. Don't see any reason we would want to bail them out.

We are the only two conferences where our tie-in BCS bowl agreed to this BS policy. Now they are trying to placate us with a preconference game? Don't they see how patronizing that is? Sorry, but no thanks.

If the Pac Ten wants a home and away series to start the season, fine. Play it in Pheonix, Seattle, Candlestick, Oakland, San Diego, Denver. Hey do a double-header with an earlier game played in a Big Ten footprint pro stadium.

Just don't agree to put our money in the hands of the Rose Bowl committee. Not after what they did to us, no way.

That was my first thought too. This is just a clever way for the Pac10 to get a "neutral" game at home against a quality opponent every year. Lets see them make a trek to the midwest and play a game in soldier field or something. It would be in Sept so they wouldn't even have to moan about the weather.

BigTen always get screwed on home field advantage in January, lets not add another game to get screwed during the season.
