Overlooked: The D

Jones and Watford were stymied yesterday. Those had been big, big sparks (as well as Dumas off the bench) lately. None of them could get it going, as Iowa's D was on.

I could go back and chart this but I haven't yet....having said that I bet that at least 16 points came directly from Iowa turnovers before our defense got set. The points off Turnovers stat is a bit misleading in my book. If you turn it over and the other team gets a fastbreak layup it is much different than a travel where you obviously have your defense set up.

My point is of the 43 points scored I bet well less than 30 points came in the half court offense for Indiana. They made several easy 15 foot jumpshoots in transition before our defense was set. Pretty amazing half court defense and rebouding.

Now if we can have that kind of inside game and defense without the 21 turnovers we could really be in business.

ZERO 3 poing FG's for Indiana yesterday, and I don't remember them getting a lot of easy buckets in the paint, either. Nice job overall by our D I thought.

I'm not ready to call Iowa a good defensive team. IU played a lot of one on one which, if you are somewhat sound with your help, you can defend rather easily.

I will say this, I thought Fuller and Cole played fantastic defense. Hedging, drawing charges, and rebounding. But yesterday I thought IU played right into that. I want to see how they do against a team that actually runs stuff.

This is so true. But don't you also think that we wouldn't let them "run stuff"? They tried a few times and we bottled it up is what I thought. I thought our scout for Indiana looked like it was pretty darn good.

Sure we were pretty sound yesterday. But I've seen us be pretty bad at times defensively this year....I mean B-A-D. I think they've improved some but we'll see how they defend the Northwestern Princeton stuff or the Bo Ryan Swing.

As someone said above, I don't think anyone missed the fact that some good defense was played when the opponent tallied just 43 points and hit no threes. You can't do that just by controlling tempo.

However, our D and our rebounding is about to get a stiffer test against Ohio State.
