Our fullback had more catches than ISM

Purdue sure made sure to get the ball to Bell (and Iowa's zone without much close man to man didnt help) but they really looked for him.

ISM wasnt hardly targeted so if PU was double teaming him then a lot of other guys should have been open, and they were, there were a lot of good completed catches, a few throwaways, a few bad throws, and some rushed throws under pressure.

the hawk running game was really working pretty well especially the outside runs and straight ahead quick hitters. I thought BFerentz should have pounded it even more to set up more play action. Petras is a little raw at making good playaction fakes and that is what the analyst Herron said.

I thought the OLIne didnt block as well in the 2nd half on passing downs also which didnt help Petras. Basically the hawk offense was very rusty in the 1st qtr played well in the second qtr and just ok in the 2nd half.

They need to get ISM into the passing game.

Not completely dismissing Petras after the first game, but we would have had 100 yds more receiving if he had made the wide open misses and floaters five feet over the heads of receivers.

I am not putting all of the absence of ISM making zero catches on Petras. ISM had a slightly high throw go through his hands and it was catchable.

I am also thinking B Ferentz needs to get ISM open. Dont you think the OC has to work on this? Hell every big passing down PU was able to get Bell the ball, 3 TDs, the last one was a joke of a defensive alignment and coverage.

I think the ball got on the receivers a little faster than they thought sometimes but that doesnt bother receivers who come out of their break expecting the ball. No one complained about John Elway's ball speed.

Petras missed some easier throws in the first half but he was under more pressure in the 2nd half. But Petras did miss some throws.

I guess comparing Stanley's first road game at ISU when he passed the hawks to victory to Petras is Petras looks average. So he needs to settle down and settle in.

I just chalk anything up that happens in these first few games to rust and just general weirdness this year. It’d be pretty tough to settle into anything unless your team is loaded with 15-20 eventual draft picks like OSU

Not sure what that really means. All are playing under the same constraints. PSU who also recruits well fell.

An OSU type team (really the only elite team in our conference) can step right into a season without 3 non-cons to get all the bugs worked out. Even if OSU is off their game, they still blow your doors off just by brute force talent level.

It's been the same story for years. Our line is completely and totally lost blocking against a 3-4 look in passing situations. Near the end of the game they were rushing 4 and the pocket either had massive holes or collapsed like it was a kitchen sink blitz where they were sending 7 freaking guys. That has been Iowa's single biggest Achilles heel bince Brian became the OC. We've beaten OSU and USC in that time because they just ran straight up 4 man lines at us and didn't blitz a ton, but some lesser teams that run that 3-4 have basically put our passing attack in park.

They really, really, really need a new o-line coach because that recurring problem is 100% on the position coach. It used to be that if you ran a 3-4 on Iowa you could basically count on the offense to pound your defense into such an oblivion that you were waving a white flag by the mid point of the 3rd quarter. Not anymore. That said, the fumbles didn't help.

I've said before that problem could be solved by giving Polasek a one way Amtrak ticket, move The Brain to OL where he should be, and Keefe to OC for play calling

Yep. I'd go back to Brain as OL/Run Game Coordinator like he was back in the day. Get KOK calling the plays again and bring in an actual QB coach. Hell, maybe even just make Polasek QB coach or something. I think he's a good macro offensive guy, he just has no clue on the line. I don't know how much more of this Ferentz has to see. Those games in 2017 where we had Daniels looking like a turn style because the defense had 2-3 guys running clean while we had our 2 guards standing around was all I needed to see and I've not seen much by way of improvement. If we had a slightly cleaner o-line, I'm pretty sure we'd have 5 more wins between 2017 and today.

Or better yet make The Brain TE coach, leave Keef at QB, and offer Joe Rudolph $1M/year to be OC and OL coach like he does at Wisconsin. It'd be a $150K raise and we'd be saving money after The Brain took his much deserved pay cut. His aspirations of being a P5 head coach are gone at least for the next ten years or so, what's he going to do? He sure isn't going to get a job anywhere based on resume.

I was definitely disappointed in our vaunted WR group’s seeming inabilty to get open, but I’m not shocked with what we saw in week one. If they don’t improve, this season will be pain, but they could also very well rally and have a solid season. Time will tell.

We were actually moving the ball on the ground pretty well. When we weren't leaving it on the ground. And in critical situations.

Having a linebacker try to cover Bell on the goal line was the real killer. That's how Wisconsin beat us in 2018. That QB's eyes had to get as big as saucers when he saw that.

This is every damn season.
Yet guys like Hooker, OJ, Hyde, etc who aren't the big time All_Americans go on to be successful in the NFL. It's like we don't translate for some reason. I don't know what it is.

It'd be fun to see that game played over if say Petras woulda hit Smith on that deep ball that first possession. Or not missed on a couple of the other open throws he missed those first 3 possessions. There's no underselling how hitting on any or all of them woulda changed the complexion of not only the game but his own confidence. ISM needs to get more touches no doubt about it. Did we run any WR screens? I don't remember any. Feels like we shoulda done 1 or 2 of those. Get that man the ball in space.

So, we had 476 yards of offense and two fumbles that stopped good drives and our offense sucks. Petras missed wide open receivers all over the place early in that game. I think he's a lot better than he showed at Purdue. Let's face it...the plays were there...if the execution was there.

The screen on 3rd down in the final drive would have gained at least 20 and maybe more...all Goodson needed was the ball.

I thought the offense showed promise...they just played like a team that hadn't played in a long time...and had a large group of new starters. They will be better in week two.

Same thing every other team is dealing with.

I'm surprised somebody (we do have a QB coach, right?) didn't talk w SP after the first series or two and calm him down. Looked jumpy all day.

The kid has been hyped up more than most Iowa QBs in a long time, Beathard and Stanley sure weren’t. I’m sure he had a lot of butterflies and was probably trying to force it to happen instead of letting it happen.

which is where good coaching comes in...or should.
