OT - Rick Majerus has passed away

Addiction is sad in all it's manifestations. Too bad Majerus could never get recovery. Heart failure for a food addict is tantamount to liver failure for an alcoholic. RIP coach.

Very sad to hear. He was a great coach. Had some good runs. I was also one that really wanted the rumors of him coming here to be true. He would have been a great Hawk. Very sad indeed. Thoughts go out to his family.

I had never heard about the living in hotels. Anyone know why he did that?

Not sure GoHawkz...maybe he just didn't like feeling alone and hotels always have people around?

Rest in peace, Coach.

There were several reasons whe he lived in hotels. I read a book that Majerus wrote years ago. At that time he was not married and the hotel was essential to him because they cleaned his room, did laundry, cook for him, etc. Plus the fact was he traveled all the time so no use owning a home he never lived in. Believe it or not he actually used the hotel workout facilities as well. For as large of a man as he was, he did a lot of treadmill work if I remember right.

He got into coaching by love of the game. He wasn't much of a player; he was just around coaches and players enough to be in position to get a chance
and took advantage of the opportunities
to move up the coaching ranks

Heard that he had his friends with him on road trips, They would party in the hotel rooms. He lived life to it's fullest just like Al McGuire. He really seemed like a good guy and fun to be around......

Thanks Uwe!

I remember when the rumor popped up that Majerus was interested in the Iowa job when Alford left and how excited I was for a night.

He's was a great coach and sounded like an even better person. Sad news indeed.

Rick was very close to coming to Iowa City. He wasn't a fan of having to do the I-Club circuit so BarGar went with TL and the rest is history.

"Nobody thought I'd be a great coach. I'm the kind of guy you'd expect to be driving an 18-wheeler through town."
