OT: OT format blows

I've been quasi-ranting about the college OT rules for some time now. 1996 started the current nonsense.....

So many down sides to the current format and today's Illinois/PSU illuminated the bad:

- A luck of the draw coin flip determines who initally chooses defense or offense. A big advantage to the winner of the flip as they almost always go on defense first.

- Takes away any and all special teams play (excluding FGs)

- Why start at the 25 yard line? Why not the 35? Why not just play an extra quarter and declare a tie after that?

- The OT "game" resembles nothing like the non-OT game.

Only soccer has a sillier OT format.

The rules were actually changed to speed the game up but today it made it take forever

The college OT rules make a heckuva lot more sense than the NFL, that's for sure. I actually like that OT doesn't mirror the rest of the 'game' -- the game has been played and a winner wasn't been able to be determined -- why continue to play the same game for another quarter, like soccer? The college rules are also fair -- both teams get an equal chance from the same starting yard line. I actually like the college rules...the only improvement I can possibly see is to make the team that scores a TD go for a 2-pt conversion after the 1st TD. I can't wait to see the Illinois-Penn St. rerun just to see how you can possibly get to 9 OTs and end up with a 20-18 score! Must have been some putrid offense in that game.

Another option would be to just kick FGs until one team misses. Start with kicking 35 yd FGs and move 5 yards back if both kickers make it...until one kicker misses. Would stop the nonsense of teams not giving their kickers scholarships or forcing them to initially walk-on.

I say for overtime they do this…

Each team gets to pick a player from the other team (has to be a starter) to be in a slap fight match to decide the winner.

If you don’t know what that is, search “slap fights” on YouTube.

You’re welcome.
Hahaha. That would be fun to watch, but might get too many concussions. But worth it just to recruit the slapping specialists. Romanians and Russians everywhere in cfb!

I like this one. Wouldn't mind sudden death 4 minute period with a kickoff first.

I heard an interesting idea once, that the team that scores first in regulation, should be awarded an extra 0.5 points That way the game can not end in a tie, and you know from the first score of the game who has the half-point advantage the rest of game.

For example, if the 1st score of the game is a FG, the team that kicked the FG gets 3.5 points instead of 3 points. If the first score is a TD, they get 6.5 points instead of 6 points.

Another idea I heard is instead of starting on the 25 in OT, each coach secretly writes down what yard line they want to start from. Then play both OT sessions for each team. If one team outscored the other team, for example 6-3, that team wins. But if both teams have the same score, for example, 3-3, then the team that started further away from the goal line is awarded 1 extra pt and wins the game.

Go back to tie games. If neither team can win in 60 minutes they deserve a half win and a half loss.

I actually like the rotating 2pt conversions, but there are some things they can do to speed it up and change the perception of how long the OT is.

First, one thing that slowed things way down was switching sides after each OT. The teams had to move 94 yards from 3yd line to the other 3yd line. So no switching sides. 2nd you should have a 40 second clock to get the other offense and other defense on the field. That will keep the flow going.

Next, once the 3rd OT starts, that's it. Everything after that is considered the 3rd OT, no matter how many times you alternate attempts. Each team only gets 1 timeout and no more. And who plays offense first and who plays defense first for each series of attempts is determined at the beginning of the 3rd OT, so that won't slow things down.

Couldn't find any slap fights

But I did find this very entertaining scene from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Shoot, Have the game decided by the drill where they put bags on the turf and have a dude with a ball try and run over the defender and vice a versa
