Did any of you watch the last two Texas 4th qtr possessions yesterday? I had ISU-TX on my laptop and the Hawks on the big screen. Herman is supposed to be this offensive wizard yet he seems to waste Ehlinger sometimes who is just a great, nifty, gritty runner.
TX had 3rd and two at the ISU 11 or 12 with about 6 minutes to go and a 4 point lead. He calls something like zone handoff/QB run up the middle and they only gained 1. Then he passes up a 7 pt lead with a short FG kick, not assured, but high percentage to call basically the same play right up the gut at an even heavier front 8 or 9 of ISU.
Whatever happened to the rollout run pass option two plays in a row if needed, which is now RPO, and put it on Ehlinger's legs and arms in open space to the wide side of the field.
Then after ISU scored, Texas was getting some decent gains and 1st downs most plays to really use the clock well. TX got to the ISU 38-40 with iirc about 30 seconds to go and instead of doing the same thing looking for 8 to ten yard gains they threw two deeper sideline passes of 20 yards or so that were incomplete and chewed up time. Again instead of Ehlinger in the pocket get him out on the edge to make a play with his feet and get OB if need be. TX lost some yardage on 3rd down and called their last time out so left the FG kicker with a 57 to 60 yard kick
It looked like TX has a good FG kicker because he boomed that kick and it was going straight as an arrow then hooked late to miss. If he was 15 yards closer it is good.
And maybe Herman wastes a lot of chances with his other play calls but it sounds like he is under fire and his team not playing as well as suspected.
