Open practice, 10/30?

There were quite a few fans there this time around, I'm sure someone besides me can give a good analysis of what went on at the practice. I was only able to stick around and watch for 10 minutes, but in that time I was able to see that things were moving fluently to how Fran would want them to be, and to put it simply I would say they were in a get **** done mode. They were going very hard and at the same time you could tell they were enjoying themselves. It looks like the practices are paying off with the team continuity, everything looks really fluid and and everyone is comfortable with what is going on.
I was also at Fridays practice for about 25 minutes, and all I have to say about that one is this: Zach McCabe doesn't miss. He is going to be a valuable STARTER, you can tell the coaching staff is really enjoying having him come on the way he seems to be, and that the players are all very comfortable with him as an offensive weapon. He legit made 6 threes in a row, the students that were attending the practice to pick up season tickets were very impressed by him. Also, from sitting near the court I was able to see just how much Brommer bulked up. He looks very comfortable with the ball and was able to position himself down low so that he could make good moves to the basket whenever he got the ball.
A couple more things, Devon Archie drove down thru the lane and threw down a monstrous dunk. Unfortunately a play after that he left to the sideline limping because of his knee, it didn't look good but since nothing has been made official by the school, I'm assuming its nothing to be too concerned about. Finally, I'm a little concerned about Cole. I didn't see him practice both friday and saturday, both days he was on the sideline just playing with a ball in his hands. I don't know what to put into this, but he's obviously a key part of the team and I would think that we would see him practicing a bit more. Thats all I have to offer right now.

I was there the 23rd and 30th. I enjoy watching how a D1 coach operates so I enjoy the practices, albeit they most likely aren't quite as long and intense as ones not open to public. Cole must have had some sort of injury Saturday as he wasn't running. Our biggest weaknesses are someone who can create their own shot and an inside scorer - which not having either one doesn't bode well. None of our bigs can finish, Basabe is still to slow around the rim and will take some time to adjust to the quicker/stronger bigs he will now be up against who can recover faster when they get beat and still block a shot from behind. All our bigs have to learn when they get an opening they have a split second to go to the rim hard. He (Basabe) will be a good player in time though. I know there has been a lot of Brommer love in the last couple weeks but I'm just not seeing it. Yes, he looks improved but he still doesn't have the quickness. I would be surprised if he averaged more than 7-8 pts a game myself and that is a stretch. Archie same thing but probably 3-4 pts a game. McCabe definitely still the best Frosh and good instincts, not flashy but solid. The walk on kid from Kirkwood (name eludes me at moment) actually is a very good outside shooter too and will get plenty of playing time it looks like. The most interesting part of practice was towards the end when they actually slowed down and were trying to run some offensive sets, many that relied on the big men moving and setting screens very quickly and fluidly. During this they also worked on trapping the ball handler out in the corner near midcourt which I liked to see. They looked a little unsure on the offensive sets and will need to run Fran's system to get more fluid. Not real impressive in set plays. They did work on a backscreen ally oop to May which was sweet. During this time, Fran got pretty intense and ticked, he was riding Archie hard. He also hates it when guys look tired or bend over with hands on knees. Could hear several comments both weeks from him regarding this.
Overall, I hate to say it but I look for 10-12 wins this year at most. Any more would be a HUGE victory. The Big 10 is stacked this year so many wins will have to come out of conference. For us to be competitive we will have to knock down threes consistently and play great team defense.
Fran was working the recruits, sitting in the stands chatting with them etc. He gets this aspect of the job well and just hoping he can somehow find a way to sign a few of these talented Iowa kids.

I already know what recruits were there on the 23rd, but can you tell us what recruits were in attendance on the 30th?

I know a kid from Illinois was supposed to be there, but not sure who else.

I'm not sure who they all were. I know Ogelsby was there. And I'm pretty sure this Agau kid from this rivals link was one of them Iowa Basketball Recruiting

There were a couple other kids and not sure who they were. Ryan Bowen came over to the seats behind the rim and told them all they were welcome to come sit on the floors seats. Anyone else know who they were?

Agau was there on the 23rd when he received and offer from Iowa. It would be interesting if he came back the next weekend on the 30th, if it was him. I have read that when he was there on the 23rd he was all decked out in Hawkeye gear and was getting along very well with Fran.

I think 7-8 points per game would be pretty impressive based on what we've gotten out of him the last 2 years.

Admittedly, I only saw about 10-15 minutes of the practice, but I thought he looked much improved. Twice when they were scrimmaging, I saw him get the ball in the post and make a quick and decisive move to the rim and finish. Now, I'm not saying he's going to be a world beater, but I think he'll have a chance to provide some quality minutes.

I seem to remember reading once that Miller's Six Pack (the Hawks 14-0 Big 10 season when they averaged 100+ points/game) ran with the cross country team to get in shape. Anyone able to verify that stray thought.

Fran definitely realizes his job could hinge on the 12-'13 classes and he's working them hard. Might not have been Agau, I really don't know for sure because not seeing these kids in person before hard to tell sometimes.

However, there was a JR Koch sighting :)

I was there on the 30th for about thirty mins, and I actually thought they looked pretty good. I also thought McCabe looked great, he is gonna be a very good player for us.
