OoTH-I feel bad for Jake....Conservative vs Playmaker

I thought Jake's first pass should have been caught. Seemed like good pass. I thought he looked very good winning the Ball State game with the two touchdown rally. Of course, that is easier than at Pitt. That being said, he might be seriously affected by the conservative nature of the coach and offensive coordinator.....

I will never have a complaint about Jake Rudock. He gave us some good memories, won 8 games as an underclassman, and would probably be the best backup QB in the conference. In fact, he could be a great asset as a coach/mentor going forward.

Ferentz didnt recruit CJ if I remember correctly..Beathard fell into their lap..Beathard called and said he wanted to play at Iowa

While you are correct that Ferentz didn't recruit CJ, he didn't fall into Iowa's lap. It was O'Keefe that recruited him, at least according to Rivals.

please explain the difference.

I think there's a distinction to be made, but I don't think he got it right. Ferentz plays the guy he feels gives the team the best chance to win, but his criteria for making that decision might not always lead him to the right decision in the end. How guys perform in practice obviously is a big factor for KF, but Beathard looks like a guy who is more of a gamer (and he's looked better than Rudock at every opportunity in game situations this year).

I've got this one.

Rudock gives us a better chance to win than Beathard does playing Kirk's ball control, conservative, punt before you make a mistake offense.

Beathard gives us a better chance to win playing aggressive, try to score, keep the defense on their heals offense than Rudock does playing the offense Kirk wants to play.

I think I just confused myself on that one. You might need to read that post a few times for it to make sense. It still might not though.

Does everyone forget Sokol? Jake might be the third best QB in that group. Think about that. I had friends report that they thought Sokol looked the best and that CJ had a lot of potential.

KF went with the guy that has less upside and could be molded into a game mgr taking no risks. The problem is it is a risk to take no risks.

Jake is a great kid, a model kid and a decent QB. We have had much worse.

CJ just has the IT factor!

This.

So what happens next? Does KF dare start Jake again?

CJ (based on accounts of his work at practice) reminds me of a kid I have on my Bantam hockey team. He's a gamer - big time. Lazy at practice, doesn't go hard at all, and really isn't impressive at practice. But, come game-time, he's #1 or #2 skater on my team. Just flat-out goes after it when the scoreboard is on.

Well that's simple. KF believes in low risk /reward ratio.

In his mind avoiding risk and mistakes is the way to win, so he plays Rudock.

Most coaches believe in a higher risk reward ratio and would likely play the guy with better physical tools but who is riskier and may make mistakes.

Its not a cut and dry issue of playing the better player. It depends on your point of view.

Ferentz' tolerance for risk might be the lowest in college football. Everything he does is play not to lose.

But I don't think he was always this extreme. He's gotten progressively worse with age, no?

He has always been this way... to be honest I can't really say its gotten worse with age.

The one thing I can say is different with age is that his stoic nature has increased.... younger Ferentz would go berserk at the Refs every now and then..

The last 2 seasons KF has made JR the starter over CJ and the one constant we've seen since KF has been coach at Iowa is his loyalty to his QB, it will take an injury or really, really bad play by JR for him to make that change. Shortly after the game ended you could tell KF didn't want to entertain any of the CJ over JR talk. I take that as nothing has changed for KF and JR is still #1 on Depth Chart and if healthy is the starter at Iowa.
