On the Willies Front

There is a difference between his wanting to come back and him being back....I wonder if his statement and intention was something discussed with Iowa...my gut says if those discussions had taken place, Iowa might have sent out a presser...but in the end, I just can't see Iowa not allowing him back into the fold unless there were serious circumstances that poisoned the water.

Kirk has his regular presser today at 12:45

Under the circumstances if KF did not allow him to return, it would be very poor PR for him and the program.

I fully suspect that KF was involved in the decision to release this news....and figured he would just cover it in his presser.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there has been a formal "release" from the U. This is just what people have heard and what Willies apparently told Blair Sanderson at Rivals. Jon's right, that doesn't mean Kirk has agreed to let him back on the team. But it doesn't mean he hasn't, either.

Hopefully we'll hear more in another hour or so.

Morehouse tweeted that Willies has been in classes and has taken care of all his academic responsibilities

In my mind, this whole situation is totally understandable and if things have worked out where Willies can be near his father in IA, then I see no reason why he shouldn't still be allowed to be on the team.

Kirk on the B1G Presser Call: Kirk Ferentz on Derrick Willies: "He chose to leave the team , which we felt bad about. ... We've moved on."

The family should have talked with Kirk first, and my guess is he would have told them they can talk in 10 days after season.

Good news hopefully. Nice comments by dwillies. I was starting to think he might be kin of a pre Madonna/ bad attitude kid which I didn't want to be the case.

Well, I'm going to presume there's a lot more to the story.
Remember how fans thought DJK was 'mis-treated' by the good Captain.
Yeah, well......just sayin.

That being said, myself, as a Hawkeye fan and knowing what
I was like at 18-19, I'd certainly welcome Derrick back and make him commit to doin things right

If I were the coach, there's no way he's coming back before the season. After that I would have the team vote on whether or not he could rejoin the team since they are the people he quit on when he left.

Was going to post something similar. Kirk does not abide mid-season distractions and with all the fan criticism and social media speculation of Willies being the first of mass defections he likely isn't interested in dealing with this now. He also doesn't tolerate players going to the media outside of approved channels. Can't really blame him.

I'd say Willies is out for this year, including the bowl game. Whether he's allowed back for next year would depend on a sit-down with Derrick and perhaps a vote by the team.

I'm sure I'll get killed for this, but here goes:

I think it's absolute bullspit that Willies is going about this 4 days before the biggest game for the program in 5 years....probably since the OSU game at the 'Shoe in '09. If you've got any sense about you, you wait until the season plays out and then you go about approaching to be let back on the team. But what you DON'T do, is go to the media first, during game prep for the biggest game in years, before you've even talked to the coaching staff. By all accounts, the kid is a really bright kid academically....unfortunately, he seems to lack the basic common sense you'd like to see as well. My oldest son is kinda like that, so my wife calls him "the dumbest smart kid I know". That's how Willies comes off to me anyway.

Look kid, just simmer down, wait for the season to play out, and then during bowl prep, see if you can get back on the team. Not to play in the bowl game, mind you....that ship sailed when you left the team in the middle of the season. But so you can get those extra 15 practices and then come back in the spring ready to go.

"It's a lot to deal all at once when the man you look up to your whole life tells you he only has a little time left. My father is going to move here and I am going to try and get my place back on the team. That's all I have to say on everything."

lol, I always laugh when someone is called a pre Madonna. I mean, the nerve of the guy to think that he actually came before Madonna. That's funny.

I know this isn't the same, but players have been known to take a leave of absence in mid-season and come back, they just don't announce their decision to transfer (al beit closer to ailing father). Obviously it doesn't generally play out in the media. Pretty sure LTP took a couple days like this his 1st or 2nd year here. Didn't John Raymond as well, before ultimately transferring to Syracuse. The ISU starting center did it this season, right before Iowa game IIRC. He came back, had anxiety problems.
