On the Hardwood: Iowa Hawkeyes

I just meant pointing out how Gesell played at the end of the year, and he did shoot the ball poorly. Marble had some games last year, and especially his junior year where he really shot the ball poorly. I know Marble was hurt part of his junior year, but I don't know if Gesell was 100% or not last year. In Marbles junior year Iowa had enough talent to win their share of games. Anyway, part of being a fan is speculation about the team. I don't think its really speculating that Iowa has some talented players.

As I said, I was shocked at Mikes 0 for 17 from the field the last three games at the end of the year...and I think he will be much better...but if not, we are in trouble. If that is throwing him under the bus...so be it. Not meant to be...just citing the shooting numbers which were bad in the spiral period.

But as I said, it was the defense that really cost us down the stretch, and so Fran will have to address that to make it a good year....I like Fran and think he is a good coach, so I have faith he will do it.

But as for the Gatens comment.....that next year we did not really replace him in close games in that he made big shots to win the prior year, and the year after, we lost many close games....nobody to hit those clutch threes...we shot horribly the next year, until the NIT, anyway.

Yes there was no one to hit clutch 3s but the team was better overall, they won more games and advanced further in the post season.

That's the point. There won't be another guy like Marble next year but that's fine, team will again be better overall and most likely go further in post season because everyone else will be capable of doing what they do better.

There's lots of ways to win at basketball but one constant in college is that upperclassmen heavy teams do better.

When you lose pretty much every close game you play last year, you don't necessarily have to get better to have a better season.

Great point, PCHawk. I always think about the Orange Bowl season in football--all of the break the team got on their way there. Then, the next season, where ALL those break went the exact opposite way.

Next year, the law of averages will work in the Hawk's favor!

They have talent are mature and will be well coached. Its going to take a pretty good team to beat them. Dickerson is going to give them another dimension they didn't have last year.

Agree about TD. But there are a few things that are becoming more clear to me this summer. Whereas a lot of fans feel we're not deep in the frontcourt, it looks like this could be the strength of the team. Woody is ready to be a solid option and GO is not far behind. White is himself as a senior. Uthoff looks to be taking criticism of his lack of aggressiveness personally. White and Uthoff are both likely to be double figure scorers. Woody may or may not get to double figures but 8-10 seems very possible. With the loss of Marble, the backcourt will not score as much, but with the addition of TD, they will be quicker. Their defense won't be as easy to get around. Their shooting and penetration will take pressure off the frontcourt.

To me there is only one way this team is as good as last year or better and that is if Trey Dickerson is the real deal and wins the starting point guard position. Losing Marble is huge as he was the only sure play maker last season. He was versatile, could score, create his own shot and defend. We do not have a replacement for that. What we need to offset his loss is a lightning quick point guard that can finish and create for others. The others consist of many solid ball players but not great ball players that are going to create their own offense. They all have limitations that prevent Fran from running offense through them. That is what many fail to see and understand.

White and Utoff are really good players but neither is complete. They each bring something different to the table from one another. Neither is a true 3 or 4. If you try to play both at the same time that means you are putting a guard on the bench on a guard heavy team.

Fran is going to have a real issue as something does not add up to me. What Trey potentially brings is the only thing that can make us good or better but he cannot bring that from the bench. If Trey is the main point guard then that means who plays between Mike G, Jok, JO and Clemmons especially if there is only one more guard spot because you have put White and Utoff on the floor at the same time along with Woody/Gabe at the post?

The personnel is decent on the team but I see problems again meshing it and making it work to get the most out of it.

Agree SpecialK. AS they say in Fargo country...Iowa is a ''funny looking '' roster this next season.

Our point guards:

Gesell: more of a combo guard, in a pg's body. but struggled shooting...
Clemmons: more of a short power shooting guards body, who struggles with his handle.
TD: small, and thin....but seems like the most true pg we have, but lacks strength needed for Big Ten

Shooting guards:

Jok- untested, but looks the part, if he shows he can defend.
Oglesby- struggles guarding quick perimeter guards...more of a small forward type body.

Small Forwards:

Uthoff- long, but lacks footspeed to guard quick wings...length of a power forward body of a shooting guard.
Uhl- very thin, might fill out with time better than Uthoff, but similar body now.

Power forwards:

White- more of a small forwards game, cept for shooting and guarding quickness.

Centers-

Woody fits the bill...proto-type Euro Center if he can push his range to 16 ft.
Gabe- fits bill for both pf and center, but still can be confused on defense and needs strength to hold position in the post.

It is an odd group of physiques....all very lean, and lacking muscle at any position.
Fran will need to be a magician to find a way to get this group to overachieve and finish in the top half of the league.
Great shooting and passing can cover all kinds of weaknesses...look at Wis. last year.
If this team does not improve in those categories, we will struggle to score. None of our guys is as fully dimensional as a offensive or defensive player as Devyn.

Agree and really good post. The only thing I will add is a returning player or two are going to be the odd man out as things shake out. I just cannot see this all working otherwise. It will be even harder if Fran plans on playing Uhl & Ellingson some as well.

I am wondering if Fran's program is at the point where incoming guys if they are the real deal will start to beat out some returners but Fran did not seem to show that though last season (seemed very loyal to veteran players).

The half court O sucked last year even with Marble because there was no spacing or post option. It was a mess and he mostly ended up being forced to take tough contested jump shots which is not good basketball.

Dickerson is a key but having at least three capable shooters on the court at all times is also a key that will make a big difference vs last year.

Woodbury is also just as big of a key. If he can be a legit post option like he did against UT then Iowa is very different team to guard vs last year where there was virtually no attempts to even work the post, partly again because the spacing was awful with way to many bodies in the paint.

There's allot of things that could make iowa a much more efficient half court team next year and they should be even better in transition by getting quicker at every spot.

Totally agree and this season hopefully the players won't be afraid of shooting.....

The reluctance and hesitation to shoot when open really hurt in the half court game last season. We still scored lots of points, despite giving up more at times.....

I anticipate improvement in all areas next season. To see Aaron take and nail a mid-range jump shot will do wonders for the team.....

I see an entirely different player in Uthoff playing in the PTL. I realize it is just the PTL, but one can polish his game there. Perhaps not playing a secondary position to Marble will help with teamwork and chemistry.....
