On the Hardwood: Iowa Hawkeyes

Will they play any defense, though?

That to me is the $1,000,000 question. I think this team has a very good chance of being a better scoring team than last years if Dickerson can penetrate and kick out, Mike, Jarrod, Josh and Peter all become more consistent on offense...I think they will.

Defensively who replaces Dev, who replaced May from the previous season. Anthony? Josh? Uhl? Someone will need to be that guy that can shut down the other teams best player.

Agreed. There are guys on this team that can score, and I think without Marble, they will likely be more team-oriented, which will hopefully result in less standing around and (you would think) more open looks would follow. I think we all know that last year, the defense was the big problem those last 7-8 games. It's tough to win when your opponent scores nearly every time they touch the ball.

If Iowa can play even serviceable half-court defense, I think they'll be pretty tough to beat. The offense should be decent, just as long as the outside shots fall at a decent clip, that is. But as I hinted at above, if they are playing as a team and moving without the ball, I hope there will be more quality shots to be had.

I'll add to the already good points that I hope we look like a totally different team in the 1/2 court. We need to learn to feed the post much better than last year.

Iowa needs guys that can score in the last five minutes of a game, and I think they have them this year.

I agree, because the "guy" we all thought was our go-to guy is long gone...I feel we now become a "team", and teams that play together will find ways to win...they will win as a team, and lose as a team...there are kids that will break out this year in ways we least expect, and this could include some of the new kids that are coming in....Crap, bball is a long ways a way...

I'm not trying to knock Marble, but the team should be a lot more mature this year. I think they will be pretty tough. Marble was a good player, but Iowa wasn't very multi-dimensional last year. Iowa should be an offensive threat from all positions this year. The offense is going to put a lot of pressure on the other teams defense. It will be interesting to see how the Iowa defense is going to be. They are going to be a lot stronger and more athletic this year.

From article:

Either way, a few things are certain: 1) Iowa will score, a lot. 2) Fran will probably do some hollerin' on occasion. 3) It will all be pretty fun basketball to watch, albeit unpredictable...which, of course, is the best kind of college basketball.
I see the strength of the 2014-15 team as being the center position. Because of that, we could score a little less, but be more efficient offensively. Defensively too, that strength conditioning Woody and Gabe have been working on the past 2 years will be asserted in 2014. If that can keep them on the court longer (ie not fouling out) the fan base could be happy in March of 2015. In short, the O and D will get better from the inside out in 2014. Either that, or it will be a long year.

In this article the guy cites how effective of an offensive team Iowa was last year....with Devyn. They were at the top in assists....that does not scream immature team to me. Now, if someone can make a case that our defensive woes were attributable to Devyn or Mel, then I can see how that could bring some improvement to this years team....but I doubt it can be done.

It just seems like some fans need to re-write the history book on last season, and find a reason to blame Devyn.
All the stats indicate that he passed the ball for lots of assists, led us in scoring, ect, yet somehow we will be better without him?

AS the author noted, Aaron was a good #2 guy on offense but can he take over the reins? His game is not suited to becoming a go-to guy against half-court defenses. He is a transition scorer, a free throw scorer, a garbage-man scorer around the hoop.

AS he indicated, Iowa's offense was very good last year. But, we had that #1 guy who took the pressure shots against the half court set defenses. Maybe that will be Peters job, but he is not proven yet.

The defense was the problem, and maybe Fran can address that somehow....but I have to see how they perform without their leader ,Devyn, before I can feel confident they will be as good or even better than last year.
Mike was shooting horribly down the stretch...if he does not shoot it well, we are in trouble. I think he will but I was shocked at his finish last year also.

I'm skeptical our half-court offense efficiency is going to be better. I fear we still lack shot-creators.

Until we have guys a few more guys that create for themselves in the half-court I fear good/athletic teams that commit to transition defense will continue to beat us.

A kid named Trey Dickerson might disagree with you. Dude is QUICK. There are 10 players on the floor, and when we have the fastest one (that is also a major threat to score), shots will be created.

The Iowa coaching staff is a good one at Iowa so they good statistics don't surprise me. To say that Iowa had a mature team last year does surprise me. A lot of the key pieces to Iowas team went from underclassmen last year to upperclassmen this year. I can understand someone being a fan of Marble, but to think Iowa is dependent upon him is pretty ridiculous. Its kind of strange that you will uplift Marble, but be quick to throw Gesell under the bus. It sounds like you might be Roy senior. Iowa is going to be more mature this year, and with the addition of another year of weight work and the junior college point guard transfer a lot quicker too. Marble was a pretty nifty player, but I don't think Iowa will lose any quickness because he graduated.

You are probably right. Iowa has a long history of having a first team all B1G selection and NBA draft pick especially the past 15 years. Losing these types of players tend to make a program better.

What kind of team Iowa has this year will be seen soon enough. I think they will be pretty good, even better than last year. I understand what people are trying to say, but it doesn't seem to have much thought behind it. Maybe I'm just to optimistic, but I don't think so.

I like the optimism and never said we could not be good. Simply stating that subtracting Marble is not the reason this team could be good. The team will be good if all or many of the IF's come to fruition to overcome the loss of him. I really hope this team is decent because it will show that the program has stabilized. We have a chance to be solid year in year out.

Iowa will not be better because Marble is gone they will be better for a ton of other reasons.

This is just the new version of "we can't win without Gattens" argument and it's stupid.

How different was Marbles role as a sophomore when Gattens was a senior vs the next two years?

Iowa has way way more talent that were all underclass men last year who are ready to take on new roles this season. Plus a new point guard who will get into the lane and put pressure on the D, something we haven't had since Dean Oliver.

Iowas half court offense was a joke last year for allot of reasons. Finding solutions to those issues that all stemmed from bad spacing will outweigh the loss of one guy who could make really difficult shots in a crappy offense.

Marble was scoring in a way that you should never have to attempt in the first place. Not his fault but it's the truth.

I didn't mean to imply that I thought the team would be better because Marble wasn't there anymore. Marble is a good player. When players graduate the younger guys mature and its their time to move up. Iowa has a lot of different factors that should make them a better team this year with the younger guys becoming upperclassman a major one. Even Uthoff was only playing his first season since high school and he will be an upperclassman this year. I like to think there will be more than two or three guys that will really elevate their games this year just through added strength and maturity. There are a lot of guys on this team that should really know what they are doing compared to last year.

As I said, I was shocked at Mikes 0 for 17 from the field the last three games at the end of the year...and I think he will be much better...but if not, we are in trouble. If that is throwing him under the bus...so be it. Not meant to be...just citing the shooting numbers which were bad in the spiral period.

But as I said, it was the defense that really cost us down the stretch, and so Fran will have to address that to make it a good year....I like Fran and think he is a good coach, so I have faith he will do it.

But as for the Gatens comment.....that next year we did not really replace him in close games in that he made big shots to win the prior year, and the year after, we lost many close games....nobody to hit those clutch threes...we shot horribly the next year, until the NIT, anyway.
