? on defense

I am a big BB fan but do not understand a lot about xs and os. The Iowa D gives up a lot wide open threes. It seems like they leave their man to give help and can not get back to their guy. I know lack of speed can be some of the problem. But when guarding a hot shooter should they not leave him?

It depends how hot. If it's a streaky guy you can leave him until he burns you. My theory is, if it is Ryne Smith of Purdue or someone you know likes to shoot 3s and is consistently going to make them stay put, but if it's the kid from UNI that you never heard of you make him earn that respect.

The biggest problem is the constant need for help on D. YOu would like that to only occur once in a while not every play.

I'm left puzzling why we always seem to need help on just about every play and why some no name always seems to have a break-out game against Iowa.

Its called "effort" and putting an opposing player on their a$$ after hitting a 3. Ask yourself how many times that's happened this year? It starts with the coaching and right now I'm just not seeing what we should be seeing at this point in the season. Sure, we lack players and talent. But all the talk about how Fran and Co are the saviour is a bit premature right now. I hope I stand to be corrected by the end of this year.

We lack size in the post. This prevents Iowa from keeping the other teams from penetrating or dishing to their bigs without the fear of an easy bucket....thus Iowa sags more than others in order to help.

We lack speed on the perimeter. This is pretty obvious but we have a bunch of fairly unathletic, non-quick perimeter players who lack the ability to shutdown their man one-on-one. They can't play them up in their 'strap because they will get burned on dribble drives and if they get burned then see problem #1 for the outcome.

We lack effort. It seems that nobody really wants to be the man and play some D on this team.

Nice post Hawkeye12345. You nailed it. We need a kid who feeds off of playing D. Just maybe it would be contagious to the rest of the team.

That and we need our 7'1" Center to be here sooner rather than later. Woodbury and Meyer are going to make a HUGE impact on next years team. They may not be 10 pts and 10 board guys from the start but they are going to give us the inside presence that we are so dearly lacking right now.

Throw in Ingram and Gesell and the perimeter becomes so much more athletic than it is right now. That will allow a spot up guy like Oglesby to do what he does best - shoot the ball. We add depth with Clemmons at PG so now our PG doesn't have to play 40 minutes. Marble can then rotate to the Wing position and play the way we all know he can.

White and Basabe will have more room and to roam inside the paint and will now be matched up against SF and PFs that they are taller than or better than on most nights.

McCabe will be able to punch somebody in the face when its needed without caring if he gets in foul trouble and May can come in with under 2 mins remaining to do some crazy *** dunk once the game is out of hand.

Basically, next years team is going to look like the normal blueprint for an NCAA caliber basketball team.

Man I hope u are right. We keep thinking next year everthing is gonna be peachy because we supposedly have the second comings showing up. Sure. Whatever. I'm not totally convinced that's gonna be the case. Freshman are freshman are freshman. Sure, they will help, but, they are gonna struggle also. And oh how I wish we had the attitude of "punchin them in the face" like you mention with McCabe. I am so frickin sick of watching NOBODY do anything about 3s raining down on us. Jesus God. Knock somebody on their a$$ and talk some trash for God's sake. Keep it clean, but cmon! Show some frickin emotion, energy, heart, etc. etc. Fran's also gotta take the reins off of our freshmen this year. Let'em frickin play already. Let them learn in the heat of battle so that next year they are ready to perform on a consistent basis. We are going nowhere this year. Absolutely nowhere. It's time to see what our young pups can do.

This year had the makings of being pretty good but we the wing player that is sorely needed f'd up and left. Brommer was supposed to be somewhat of an inside presence but he's been hurt since the end of last year. Archie tore his labia again so of course he's been no help. Olaseni has been a typical Freshman big. McCabe has been a nice find although you could tell he had the desire but maybe not the skills to be a nice contributor.

Point being, this year had the makings of being a decent year - bubble team at best, but everything that could have gone wrong has. Its time to look towards next year and get the experience to the players that will be key contributors moving forward while still respecting players (Gatens) that have given their best effort through the worst years in Iowa history.

this:)

We need Acie Earl!, We have no one to protect the basket and help our slower perimeter players from getting beat off the dribble, when Campbell is much quicker and more athletic than Iowa it does not bode well for the Big Ten play. We did a nice job of frustrating Chicago State's offense.

Fran is going to become a much smarter man to man defensive coach in 2012 thru 2015, help is coming
