On a night when we lost by 7 - we were outscored by a total of 14 points....

...in the period between the under 16 and the under 12 timeouts in both halves. Those are both times that Fran makes wholesale substitutions. These were our lineups in that four minute span of both halves

1st half lineup for the majority of time between the under 16 and under 12 timeouts:

PG - Clemmons
SG - Oglesby
SF - Uthoff
PF - McCabe
C - Olesani

That lineup was responsible for allowing a 7 point lead to dwindle to 0 in that 4 minute span.

2nd half lineup for the majority of time between under 16 and under 12 timeouts:

PG - Marble
SG - Oglesby
SF - Uthoff
PF - McCabe
C - Olesani

That lineup was responsible for allowing a 5 point lead to go to a 2 point deficit between the under 16 and under 12 timeouts.

I'm not sure what has happened to the bench over the course of the last couple of weeks, but there used to be a time where the 5 reserves would hold or even increase the lead. That time, for whatever reason, appears over. And we are too close to the BTT and the NCAAs to get it figured out. Now's the time to shorten to 7 players (normal starting 5 plus Olesani and Oglesby) and let that group climb or fall.

Excellent post. This is truly a mystery. I am afraid Fran is really scrambling trying to find a way to "coach" the team to a victory during the game. And, I don't mean that as a criticism of the coaches. Also, I don't know if I think he should shorten the lineup to 7 or 8 players, necessarily...but, I get your point and it should be considered as an option.

Very good analysis, very interesting.

You can tell there are certain combinations that dont gel or have all the tools out there.

I thought Uhtoff had a mostly good first half and was pretty aggressive but he was getting manhandled in the second half.

I think fran needs to use the bench to give some short breathers.

Couldn't help but notice that during both those periods of time Gessel wasn't on the court. Albeit last night wasn't one of his greatest games, the fact is whether he turned the ball over or not he's still one of the best floor generals in the conference when it comes to orchestrating an offense and eliminating turnovers. He may have turned the ball over quite a few times last night, but are we better with him out of the game? I don't think so.

Key is there should never be a lineup that includes less than 2 starters. I don't care how good the bench is. Gesell is the "straw that stirs the drink" and that is with defense and offense. He needs to be a 30 plus min guy.

Definitely feel the rotation should be trimmed to 7-8 guys, and honestly, I'm not so sure Clemmons shouldn't be that eighth guy. He's played pretty solid ball in his limited minutes ever since conference play started and he'd let us keep Marble on the wing when Gesell needs a breather. I feel better with Clemmons running the point than I do with Devyn lately.

Uthoff just isn't there yet; he get stripped going to the basket way too often because he simply doesn't have the strength yet, and he's a definite defensive liability.

Gesell/Sapp/Marble (in that order, IMO)
Marble/Oglesby
White/Marble
Basabe/White
Woody/Olaseni

You can mix other guys in a tiny bit (specifically Uthoff), more in the case of foul trouble. But other than that, stick with the eight guys above.

In 1980, the Final 4 year, it was darn near Iron Man basketball at Iowa. Toughen up and play 35 ya cream puffs.

Excellent post, Spider. I can understand the rationale behind being deep and wearing teams out, but some of the combinations are mind-numbing.

Show me the trend in every game during the Big 10 season when the subs come in during this stretch and you will get my attention...if your data holds. Taking a couple of snapshots from 1 game is meaningless. This is not a legitimate sample size. I know there are games when our subs came in and extended leads. Get this data for all 15 conference games and then I'm open to discussing this point. Two samples from one game proves nothing.

You really can't agree our bench hasn't played well as of late??

I posted in another thread... It's been some at OSU that Uthoff has scored double figures.

McCabe.. We all know has been struggling

Olaseni... Had 2-3 games he was lights out but since hasn't been the same caliber of player.

Ogelsby - started a few games so technically his scoring production didn't come from the bench.

Clemmons and Jok play 5 min a game or whatever and rarely make an impact.

It should be pretty clear the bench isn't producing as it once was earlier this year.
