Oliver Martin at Michigan BBQ Today

This makes sense. Oliver is enjoying the acclaim, as he should. I would like to see him as a Hawkeye. He could be developed into an outstanding player, and have a chance in the NFL after a career at Iowa. However the same is true at Michigan. We should have jumped on board much earlier. Whereever he goes, I wish him well.

I'm not sure I am going to be all that disappointed when he goes elsewhere. There's something about his need for being pampered that does not sit well with me. The joke of this to me is he'll probably be a bust after all of this fuss over a kid who blew up in non contact (not real games) camps. Too funny.

In what way has he needed to be pampered? All he has ever said is that if Iowa had gone after him first and earlier, it would have been hard to go anywhere else.

I think you answered your own question. If he's holding Iowa to something that he does not hold other schools to that's silly. Why not commit to UNI or Directional Michigan then since they offered first if when within the process matters so much?

Honestly I really do not care if this young man comes to Iowa or not with a bitter, cry-baby attitude. I'll cheer someone else on.

Yes he lost every big game that mattered last year; 0-3
The other games 'didn't matter'? Why did they play them then? That's a losers mentality if I've ever heard it. He lost the games all by himself? So he won all the other ones by himself? 'He' lost the Mich. St. game? They should have had him punt the ball? You folks don't want to be told your idiots and morans, but you post stuff like this and remove ALL doubt............

The Michigan coaching staff absolutely lost the MSU game. His position coach or Harbaugh himself should have told him to just fall on the ball if there was anything wrong with the snap in the slightest.

Now if they did tell him that and he still didn't do that, then it isn't their fault, but I doubt very much they explained the situation to him and he was doing what he would normally do, try to get some sort of kick off.

This thread is full of typical "woe is me" Hawkeye-ism. No one had offered Martin until after he'd blown up at consecutive camps this spring and summer; then everyone offered him at once. Because of that, he's just now starting his recruiting process.

Also, don't forget that his HS baseball team made it to State and that was on the same weekend as the Iowa Tailgater. So, while OM couldn't attend the tailgater because of baseball, his dad tweeted that he would have been at the tailgater if not for baseball.

I do know that after the camp in Oregon, OM bonded pretty well with a couple of UM verbals that were there, namely McCaffery at qb. UM is a legit contender. But so is Iowa. just let this play out. The sky hasn't fallen, yet. At least wait until it hits you in the head. It looks like UM, MSU and Iowa are the top 3, right now.

Can't put the Michigan State game on him, that was a fluke. And as for losing two big ones, that should sound familiar.

Point was, Rudock looked more like a QB last year, hell he broke Michigan passing records. So what happened between December 2014 and September 2015? (rhetorical question)

Good point on the players with whom he was visiting Michigan yesterday. Most of the guys he's pictured with are athletes he met at The Opening last month. That's a pretty unique environment wear these kids often form strong bonds.

All games count but the point is the most difficult 3 games on the schedule his team lost plain and simple. He threw a deciding pick 6 against Utah along with some other big misses and many forget he missed on an open deep ball late in the game against MSU that could have put the ball game away so it would not have come down to a botched punt.

Football is a team game but if the same QB is going to get lauded for stats against lessor opponents then it should also be pointed out that he was still an intregal part of 3 losses on a team with fundamentally better talent than Iowa.

My two cents on JR and last year is this. He got a little better. Lots of QBs improve between JR and SR seasons. Also he went to a team with pretty darn good talent all over to throw to. A coach that has a good track record of developing QBs. I think it was the perfect storm for him to have a good year.
Now my memory may be a little foggy but unless that other guy wasn't including their bowl game as a "big game" didn't they win that going away?

As far as Oliver goes has he set any kind of timeline for a decision? Before the season, during or after? I haven't heard if he has. I have a bad feeling he's going if not to Michigan maybe somewhere else. He just sounds like a kid that wants to get away from home to go to school and his popularity is through the roof now.. But I'll be tickled pink if he does decide to stay home. He'd be a perfect fit here and beloved as a home town hero if he did. That's not something Michigan or anywhere else could offer. Let's get Timmy Dwight and Nate Kaeding to help recruit him...

Anybody badmouthing him really should take a step back and think about what you'd do in his place.

No matter how level-headed he is (I have no idea, neither do most/all of you if you've never met him), he's a kid! And it's nice to feel wanted, and popular! Let him have a little fun!

More specifically to this case, like it or not Michigan is a bigger "name" and has a much better history of receiver success to show him. The all-time list of Hawkeye receiver all-americans or NFL'ers is veeeeeery short!

If you''re a big time high-school receiver, do you think a KF offense is going to give you the best chance to show that?

I definitely won't be surprised, or blame him, if he goes somewhere else.

Unless he picks Illinois, or somebody like that.... or Wisconsin... or Nebraska... or ISU ?!?...

I don't think anyone should be attacking the kid. But a white guy starting at WR for Michigan? I think Martin should be focused on Vandeberg starting over D. Willies. That should tell you all you need to know Oliver.

JR had a great last 6 games. His first 7 were very Iowaesque

His QB rating in his first 7 games: 48, 26, 25, 97, 52, 93, 58 (5-2)
His QB ratings his last 7 games: 70, 99, 95, 74, 90, 98 (5-1)

Even when he played poorly they won most of the time. When he played well (last 6 games), they still got stomped by OSU. Got lucky to beat Minnesota (Minny clock management at end cost them the game), took overtime to get past Indiana, and didn't beat Penn St. in a really convincing manner. It tells me that Michigan's success had much more to do with the surrounding players than JR.

Could be, but you don't pass for the second most yards ever in a season at Michigan, unless you're doing something right. I think it's safe to say the QB coaching might have been a little better than what he got at his previous school.

Jake threw for more yards because he attempted 50 more passes at Michigan than in any season with Iowa, and he had way better WR to throw to as well. There is a reason CJ was 2nd team All B1G and Jake wasn't. Yards don't tell you a complete story

Imagine if Darboh, Willies and Tevaun were the top 3 WR's in 2014? Of course it's just something to imagine, you'd never want to have it as an expectation.

<<So what happened between December 2014 and September 2015>>

A whole spring to get fully healthy, for one. And a couple REALLY bad games for him in early September...

I love how people like to use stats when it they think it helps their 'case' (opinion) and ignore them or marginalize them when it doesn't. Everyone wants to put 2014 on Jake, but ignore the fact that our run game was way down that year, thus putting Jake 'behind the chains' way more than usual and our defense was as bad as any in the KF era. But it was all Jake's fault and CJ would have won us more games, lol. Christ, their stats (since you guys like to bring them up) are almost identical from 2014 to 2015 but we won more games. So what was the difference? Could it have been rushing for 500 more yards and rushing for 13 more TD's? Could it have been a VASTLY improved defense? It all has to click people and that's on everyone. Jake Rudock was a very good QB and he showed it at Iowa, Michigan, and to the pro scouts...But when things don't go 'your' way, you whiners have to find someone to blame, so you made JR your fall guy
2014 JR 12 games 2436 yds. 16 tds 5 int's 176 yds. rushing
2015 CJ 14 games 2809 yds. 17 tds. 5 int's 237 yds. rushing
Well, there's the 'stats', so who was better? lol By game averages, JR was 'better' in almost every catagory...why can't you whiners just let it go? I like CJ and can see why the coaches had a hard time deciding between 2 very good NFL caliber QB's....Move on!!! This was a thread about a recruit going to Michigan and you SAME whiners are STILL bringing this stuff up and trying to justify something..................

I agree that JR was unduly maligned. But I'm still glad CJ was given the starting position.

And I truly believe JR not going through spring ball and getting "healthy" is what made him a good runner again once he got to UM. If he had stayed and CJ had gotten injured, we still would have had a great season. But I also don't think JR makes the three huge plays (all non-passes) in the Iowa State game.
