wonder what the housing is in that first picture - west of the stadium. almost looks like barracks of some kind.

I think was during WWII, Kinnick hosted the "Iowa pre-Flight Seahawks" football team during '42, '43 and '44 seasons, as we were a naval conscription school. They were actually bosses, finishing 7-3, 9-1 (#2 in the nation) and 9-1 (#6 in the nation). Their star player in 1942? None other than Forest Evashevski.
My guess is that those were the Pre-flight naval barracks.

probably right, or at least close. the funny thing is that the photo has a date of 1950. Maybe it just took a while to dismantle, or the kept them for other use, or maybe used for korean war as well.

Ankle, that was indeed married housing. I can't count myself in the legacy of Iowa graduates in my family, but my grandfather lived there when he was going to Iowa for pharmacy school in the late 40's. My dad grew up in one of those barracks and he graduated from Iowa in 1973 as a dentist. Oddly enough the spot my dad tailgated in for nearly 2 decades was almost the exact spot where my grandparents "hut" was. I think since my dad started school at Iowa in the fall of 1967, he has missed less than 10 home games. He was born in 1949 and literally played as a toddler in the shadows of the stadium. Even though the program blows, I miss living that far away and not going to games in the fall.
