Old School Football

Man, the praise for Iowa from Ohio State this week has been all over the place. I can’t remember a time where a team was trounced as bad as Ohio State was, and then threw so much glory to the opposing team. It’s been everywhere. Which means credit to the Buckeyes fan base and media for being so fair and objective. It’s NOT what I expected.

Funny thing is that KF was going "outside-of-the-box" for him that game. They flipped flopped the play calling on first down and instead of running it 70% on first down probably passed 70% on first down. Iowa realized that the key to the game was controlling Ohio States linebackers and exploiting them.

They didn't let Ohio States LB's stack the box and stuff Iowa's run. They made them cover Iowa's TE's and they didn't do that well. But, the secondary advantage of that was that they got those LB's out of the box and allowed Wadley and Butler substantial yards.

Iowa passed to set up the run (to clear the box and get the LB's on the TE's) which in turn resulted in more rushing yards.

When you have a QB that takes care of the ball and doesn't throw INT's, I think you go this route until the D stops it, then cross them up and run more if needed.

Well KF has been doing this a long time. We all know how frustrating it can be when it isn't working and how great it is when it is working.

You are clouding old school football with success or lack of it. Though yes, Iowa plays old school, there was huge difference between how Iowa played OSU and the rest of the schedule. Are all still old school? Yes for sure. The OSU reminded me a lot of when Iowa and Illanoy took turns pounding each other in the 80s.

It is obvious that Iowa adjusted to OSU rather than just being Iowa. This isn't a case of Iowa keeping on doing what they were doing and they got it right this time.

14 points likely came from surprise. Add another TD for OSU being flat. The rest is Iowa out coaching OSU combined with more speed at certain positions.

I think when Urban describes Iowa playing like "Old School", he's pertaining to the stout line play where Iowa was pushing Ohio States line back and being more physical.

I didn't write the article, so I'm not "clouding" anything.

Well, kick me in the behind. Deanno and Gold.

I posted in the game thread at the point right after the fake FG that we had thrown 31 times and run only 20. I dont recall if any of those rushes were Stanley scrambles ( or if he even scrambled...i don't recall)...now I think we finished with more rushes than passes but when the game was in the balance the 60/40 pass/run ratio was definitely something Stanley showed he could handle.

and a 60/40 pass/run ratio is not old school

I didn't expect the OSU people to act that way either. The Hawks aren't slow and ploddy like most people think. Just because we play in the west doesn't mean we don't know how to play football. Anyway the west has taken a bad rap from the east and I think the west is closing in on the east...........excluding the fuskers. From the opening gun to the last second the Hawks were playing lights out and if a person can't respect that there's something wrong with them. OSU proved they appreciate tuff nosed relentless in your face football.

They are mad at Urban. They think they got beat by being out coached and maybe the talent level has dropped for the upper classes.

OSU praise for Iowa isn’t a huge minority of Buckeye nation.

Can we stop with this fake news that OSU was flat for Iowa. OSU smacked back at Iowa every time Iowa scored — easily.

The score was tied for the first 27 minutes of the game. And it was still a two score game for about the next 12 minutes through the third.

That is funny. You do your own jokes?
Yes. I coached the junior high comedy club in Urdense, Ukraine back in the nineties. Was in a match against a school from Kurkankoachanuvich, Russia.

Their coach was po’d the judges gave us a couple rounds but we shutout the Russkies 2-0. I mean, who couldn’t. Russians have no sense of humor so shutting them out is like Trinity & Toboggan whipping the USA national soccer team.

But after the match their big hairy coach, like 6’4” 235 lbs came after me and crushed my funny bone. She was just an angry bitter old broad. I’ve never been the same since.

Can’t do stand-up anymore with a messed up funny-bone. No stamina to tell long funny stories unless it’s about my life coaching comedy. Did some varsity drama coaching, too. Just relegated to one-liners that hit the sweet spot every now and then.

Thats cool. Some Ukies and Ruskies are funny though. Ive done a lot of work there. The old commies have no sense of humor without Vodka. Was there in early winter once and needed windshield washer fluid...filled it with vodka and got stopped in a sobriety check. Could have used a joke.

Those Ohioans know their football. They appreciate the game and know when they get their ass handed to them. What makes them respect Iowa even more is how they did it. They lined up and knocked the shit out of them up front.
