Ol’ KF Has Rebuilt the “O”

Huck, the problem with the purpose of this thread is that it requires us to have hope and optimism about Iowa's offense. That's like asking a Husker fan to believe that Nebbie will actually win a close game. Too much PTSD. Its much easier to discuss what we are all comfortable with: BF sucking. :)

Seriously, I am super excited to see year two of Lester's offense, with the best QB room we have had in a decade and an OC that finally has some free reign to shape the offense into something formidable. But, I will temper the enthusiasm until we see some results on the field.
Right. My original post said, “Now, results, no excuses.”
I was fascinated with the detail. When threads get into the details, be it football or basketball, I am a happy guy.

In addition to the dearth of development and productivity at the QB position the last five years, we have to acknowledge that the OL play has also been bad. Barnett had a pretty empty cupboard when he took over the role and he had to play some young guys before they were ready. Also, its hard to show great line play when you have zero threat of a down field passing game. I feel like Barnett has righted the ship with more of a pipeline of OL that are more senior, bigger and ready to play in this league. Couple that with a multiple threat offensive set with effective QB play, and I feel like this offensive could start to hum. We saw glimpses last year. Again, we don't have to be great. Just good on offense. Good will do.

Fair.

When it comes to Kirk and offense I have PTSD and @hawkdrummer1 post was a trigger.:)

It feels like Kirk is going to FINALLY be hands off on this. Kirk ran the Mike Shanahan system until it was beyond outdated. Now, that they are doing the Kyle Shanahan modern version of the offense, it is exciting.

Since when?

Last year during an interview Tim stated that Kirk has over ruled him on some of the plays he sent into the huddle.

I hope you are right but I don’t think Kirk will ever be totally hands free from Tim during game time calling.

I am not persuaded that Kirk’s OCD on conservative play calling will ever just let Tim call all the shots.

There are few head coaches on the planet that don't at least occasionally overrules a play here and there. They are managing the overall flow of the game and sometimes they need a run play to milk the clock when a pass play was called. I am sure KF has overruled Parker from time to time as well. Hell, the QB can overrule Lester via an audible depending upon looks. Its a group effort, but I would wager that 90-95% of the plays run are what Lester calls down to the headset.

Yes, I think that's part of why they have made changes. I have hopes for Lester's offense. We saw some glimmers last year.
I would add that a strong NFL based offense that focuses on inside/outside zone blocking has, and will likely continue to be, well within KF’s comfort zone.

Just his first year showed significant improvement. I am sure things will continue to improve.
Think of the QB room he had last year versus the one he has this year. Granted, both sets were brand new to his system, but I have far more faith in the Top 3 guys this year compared to last year. And, the other 10 starters on offense are all in their second year of the system. We should see appreciable improvement in the passing game this year. I have not been excited about Iowa's offense since Stanley's senior year.
