OK- on to Purdue, get past yesterday's mistakes

#1 this is a mistake laden team and I hate to use the cliche but they need to "clean things up", fix the mistakes to beat Purdue
#2 Evaluate Nate and get Mansell ready, Nate's thumb, his footwork, on many short drops his offensive line was pushed into his legs so no room for footwork, others he had guys wide open but missed, miss to Hock was a game changer in 1st half
# Did MSU give us a mid-season game plan on defense, how did they take Moore out of the game?

This game is just as important. The hawk D is very good against the run but still have to hold down Knox etc, Blough not near the runner McSorley is , get them in passing downs and pressure Blough who got reamed by his head coach late in yesterday's game, that was telling and strange, double team and pass off Moore on crossing patterns .

Off line needs to step up, maybe the Paulsens and others need some snaps, the middle three got ate up alot, I wasnt watching the tackles that much but need better run blocking and run efficiency early on and better pass pro.

Special teams are looking better on punts both ways, great kickoff returns but we had one or two guys blocked out of their lanes on PSU's big return, most teams arent returning so cant go to sleep.

I still see Iowa beating PU if we have just regular 60% Nate who gets back to scanning his receivers

What you looking for in this game for hawks to win?

I think you nailed it with #1. This team has kilted itself with mistakes. Bad turnovers, presnap mistakes, bad coaching decisions, not making simple throws to move the chains.

Just have to make the simple plays and not turn the ball over. And sometimes you have to take the easy FG rather than risk coming up empty in the RZ like they did in the Wisconson game. Play with the lead and let the DL take over.

As for Moore and Purdue specifically, MSU played very physical. Purdue doesn’t play with the physical edge like they did last year. Moore was rarely tackled by one guy yesterday. And he got frustrated. When Iowa has a chance to hit Blough, Moore, or Zico they need to make it count.

Dominate at the line of scrimmage both ways and get the ball to the playmakers on offense. Limit big plays by Purdue. Have to get pressure on Blough...don't let him get comfortable back there.

Win the turnover battle....no more brainfart interceptions out of Stanley. If he is going to get picked off, be picked off throwing downfield making the Dback have to make an outstanding play. No gifts.

Get touchdowns in the red zone.

To add to the MSU/Purdue discussion, I would go so far as to say that their game against OSU was a fluke, but OSU was definitely overrated and likely still are.

I think a big part of the OL problems is Alaric Jackson. He's been extremely inconsistent all season, and struggles with better pass rushers. He needs to get his act together or it might be time to give Kallenberger a shot.

Blough will make enough plays.....can Stanley match it or exceed it?

Rinse and repeat with Thorsen and Northwestern.

Good stuff, and you can hit knox hard but I dont know if that dude feels it, brick wall type player

Give me another day to get over yesterday's fiasco.

Haha, it took me a long time last night typing on this site to somewhat flush it.

I picked the hawks preseason to lose at PSU, I thought PSU sort of shot themselves in the foot against MSU and OSU so I thought they were a very good 2 loss team. I thought the game was 50-50 at the start yesterday but then I sort of saw the momentum swing at the end of the first half through the 3rd qtr.

Cant let that mo go to PU this week

Blough and Thorsen will give Iowa problems, it will come down to the Iowa offense doing enough .

Yes, you still have to be ready to stop PUs run game on first and second down, read run and dont let them get into 2nd and 3rd and short.

When Wisky used their big jumbo package against the hawks then got good first and 2nd down runs to keep the pass rush off hornibrook

MSU made Blough out of rhythm but he will be at home Saturday, though game

Mansell needs at least a series early against Purdue, and in every game the rest of the way. Iowa can't risk Stanley having yet another bad game and throwing away the season.

Anything beyond the Holiday bowl has already been lost. Don’t play Mansell unless he is ready to play. Lose this weekend and it is all about preparing for 2019. NS is coming back next year might as well try and fix him now.

Team needs a wake up call. If that means replacing players who constantly make mistakes then so be it. I'd much rather lose with young players making mistakes than veterans doing it game after game.

Yep, I might need 2. The players hopefully can flush it by tomorrow morning, but like the Wisc game, knowing it was Right There, as a fan, I need another day.

Unbelievable how we are losing games.

This team absolutely has the talent to win out. I mean good lord, our qb had about as bad of a game as possible and again, we are a play away..on the road...against a legit team.

Goddamnit.

The one thing know one commenting here knows is injuries. This time of year is a major part of the equation for every teams' success.

Stanley has obvious thumb injury at end of the game. Maybe he's been banged up for weeks. Affects timing, lack of practice, etc. Who knows - we don't.

WR's - ISM has missed time, maybe others in terms of practices, reps. Who knows - we don't.

TE's - Fant had a concussion - how much practice did he miss? Affect his shape?

RB's IKM & Young both have missed time, plays due to injuries. How badly ?? Who knows - we don't.

Same with some DB's, LB's, an OLman. We don't know what really happens day to day.

Every team has them. Different teams/coaches deal w/ them differently. Is a big part of college / pro football. Hayden always had players who were great on Saturday & 'didn't practice once the entire week' - so he said.

Stanley hurt his thumb very late in the game. He is not banged up. He is just no good,

I'll add to that. He's been pretty bad against other teams earlier in the year as well. I'm almost 100% certain he wasn't hurt starting the year....

You nailed it here and of course why everyone is so pissed off. Iowa was so close after playing so badly. Can you imagine how different the narrative would be if Iowa wins that game 31-30? "The mark of a great team is winning on the road even when you play poorly" etc and we would be talking playoff scenarios right now. Thats how thin the margin of error is that results in a completely different mindset here.

I said this in another post and I'll say it here, Iowa is still ranked in the top 20 after a loss. That is definitely a step in the right direction.

Now the Purdue game is the key to the season. Win it and Iowa is the West favorite. Then I believe Iowa runs the table and likely goes to B1G championship game and ends regular season around #10.

Lose to Purdue and Iowa likely falls out of the top 25, chances in the West are gone, and another Pinstripe Bowl type nonsense.
