Oglesby is a great defender

Fran was using McCabe late for offense, then subbing in Oglesby for defense. Smart move. In preseason, Fran kept saying Oglesby was one of the best defenders on the team.

Oglesby, along with Marble and White, really defended well the last 4 minutes as Iowa closed it out on a 20-8 run.
 
Agree. Oglesby played some really good defense. And Illinois player made a couple of tough shots while he was on them. It happens.

He's the most consistent. But Marble can play some damn good defense when he wants to. He did an outstanding job in several stretches today, just denying Rice the ball. When he dedicates himself, Marble is our best perimeter defender.
 
not sure about this... oglesby is good at closing out on shooters and his fairly tall and can be hard to shoot over.

But quick guards go right around him... I thought tonight he couldn't stop his man from penetrating many times.

You want oglesby guarding a 3 pt shooter, but a penetrating guard is not a good match up for him.
 
He's decent. I won't say great or even good but decent.

He's still slow footed, but he is a heady player and 6'6" helps make up for that. He got called for a couple fouls tonight for using a hand check to slow down a driver who was going by him.

I think we probably saw him in the game late for offense/free throw shooting.

That's my honest assessment. Let's not act like we are gonna send him out to match up with the other teams top wing player. He plays a lot of zone while he is in the game because he can't match up with a quicker guard that can score.

This. When the laser is on or opponent guard/wing play is crucial to that team, Dev steps up on D.
 
I agree that Ogelsby is a good defender. I like his all around game and his basketball IQ. He will never play in the NBA but is a good college basketball player and knows his role on the team and does it well.
 
JO's D started getting better near the end of his freshman year. Since then it has become better each year. He is a dependable defender now in addition to being an excellent ballhandler and passer. On occasion he will nail a three to the delight of the fans.....

He is certainly an integral component of the team.....

This is a dumb post. If JO is guarding the other team's 5th option I'm likely fine with it. Marble, White, etc. will be guarding the primary options. I'll take my chances with JO against the player he's likely to be guarding in this situation.

The point is simple.. If he was a great defender he would be on one of the other teams best options, which is not the case... thus the conclusion he is a decent defender but not great.

Thank you for understanding the point. Of course JO can guard the 4th or 5th option at the end of the game. They aren't going to shoot the ball!
