Oglesby..Harnessing the Confidence

He was 44-119 this year from three. .375 shooting, not horrible for a freshman.

However, the numbers are a bit titled. He scored in double figures six times this year, with four of those outbursts coming in games where Iowa lost by double figures.

Against Creighton, Clemson, at Indiana and today vs MSU he hit 17-24 treys, or 71%. That means that the rest of the year he was 27-95, or 28.4%.

It's easier to shoot when there is nothing to lose. He needs to bring that fearless mentality with him at the start. I think he can do it and he actually brings more to the program than I thought he would.

He is a true freshman Jon, I expect him to display more confidence next year. The bottom line is that he has proven that he has the ability to knock down that shot.

That may be some of it, but I think a lot of it also has to do with defenses relaxing because they have 25 point leads. It's hard to fight around the screen with the same intensity that you would in a tie game, when you're up by so much.

Kingsbury was 44-137 his freshman year. Those 44 threes were a Iowa freshman record at the time.

We all know what happened that second season for Chris.

Not ripping the kid. I actually think he is better than what I thought he would be and see some real promise in his game.

38% 3 pt shooting is excellent for a freshman, if he can average around 40% or higher the rest of his career he will be invaluable! He made tremendous progress since Dec. I hope he doesnt take a step back next yr similar to Carwright and Baasbe.

Imagine how open he will be next year when teams have to double down on our 7-footer. Even if Woody is not great, he will demand respect. It will open up the whole floor and the sum will be greater than the parts. Mark my words...

Maybe, but some of the shots he made in those situations were not easy and he knew he was going to shoot before he caught the ball...shooters have to always feel like that. If you decide to shoot after you get the ball, when you are a trey specialist, your chances of success go down, IMO. That doesn't mean you have to be a Kingsbury-like gunner, either. For all the fond memories of Kingsbury's shooting range, not sure that he didn't hurt his team at times with his shot selection.

AS time goes by with the returning players (White, Basabe, McCabe and Marble) his chances at ope shots are going to be better. Add that with a real center (Woodbury) and a skilled forward (Meyer) and they are going to be great. I've heard repeatedly that Woodbury is an excellent passer. Hello mister Oglesby.

The .375 shooting percentage would be the 5th best percentage in Iowa frosh history.

Awesome stat find, appreciate the info, keep them coming, Hawk fans have a lot to look forward to in the future, it is amazing how much Fran has improved this program in just 2 short years.

38% is a solid number for anyone who takes a high volume of 3pt baskets. That's an EFG% of 57%.

He also won't have Gatens always drawing the other teams best perimeter defender next season. Nevertheless, he's clearly our best 3 point shooter (though McCabe is surprisingly close) and for that reason is basically a lock to start at the two next year.

He started stepping further and further away from the 3pt line to get open shots.

Forgive me but I swear that McCabe missed every three point shot I saw him take thins season. Am curious what his actual % was...

He is an excellent defender and he rarely gets credit for this. If he can build confidence in himself on offense, he will be very good.

Are you kidding? Must not have watch much this year. He hit 2 in a row today.

Granted, I've seen him make some 3's but I'm not sure the overall % is enough to justify someone saying he is the best after Oglesby. I wonder what the individual player stats are for 3 point shooting.
